Hey, I was working on a mix this weekend, and I just noticed something really weird going on with it....
I was having serious problems getting the kick drum to cut through at all. For some reason, I think the acoustic guitar was somehow muddying it up a bit, but no matter what I did Eq-wise, I couldn't seem to fix it. (Also worth noting: I recorded drums through a mixer onto two tracks on a Fostex MR-8, so once I dumped everything into the computer for mixing, I lost all specific control over the kick....now it's just left and right.)
Anyway, I got everything sounding the best I could, burned a CD, sat on my couch and listened to it a bunch of times on my decent-quality home stereo, and the same problem with the kick was still there.....it was muddy, and while you could kinda feel it, you couldn't really pick out individual hits.
So just a few minutes ago, I was sitting in my home office, two rooms away from my stereo, and the CD I burned came on in my 5 disc changer. Weirdly enough, the bass drum was not only there, but it sounded pretty much exactly how I wanted it to sound.
Could someone possibly explain why that might be happening? Obviously it has something to do with the distance between me and the stereo speakers, but I'm really curious to see if anyone has any suggestions for how I could better initially produce that sound I heard from two rooms away (which, overall, was much tighter and more focused), rather than the one I heard when I was sitting a few feet away from it.
This might be a weird question, and the answer might be far more complicated than I can comprehend, but I figure it's worth a shot.
Thanks.
