My Mesa F50 amp makes a chimming noise..

I just can't see stepping down from a Mesa to a Valveking. I mean it may not make a huge difference but I just couldn't see doing it. I'd say save up even more and then buy the valveking also, the more amps the merrier.

Order from Eurotubes.
Bob is a seriously cool guy. Just tell him what you have and he'll hook you up with the correct JJ tubes.
They're much cheaper than the Mesa tubes, and according to what he and many others say, they will make your Mesa run closer to "correct" bias (not the cold bias that Mesa is infamous for).

If it were me, I WOULD NOT downgrade amps.
I've played many solid state amps, and two other tube amps, but I've never found the sound like I have in my Mesa!
You'll kick yourself in the arse if you do! :D

Ericlingus, this is the Police
we know you are in there.
Lay down your scarf and mittens and
STEP SLOWLY AWAY FROM THE PEAVEY!!!

okay okay im most likely not going to. The only thing I may do it go for the 30 watt version of my amp because it's new. Mine is used. 30 watts is still plenty for me.

Yes it is. I use 30 watts and man o man is that thing louder than any source thats been recorded in my studio. At two it starts to howl at 3 its almost too much. I run a 4x12 1960a cab off my 30 watt head and it does a beautiful job.

This is acceptable.

Carry on. :D

Well

I don't believe they have a valve king there. I'll look out for it though. I'm pretty sure i'll go back to the mesa though. Although I really do like that peavey.

When you return it, don't mention you had it wrapped in a comforter in your closet. They may frown upon that.

lol no im not going to mention that. I'm also never going to do that again lol. I learned my lesson.

Tap each of the preamp tubes lightly with a pencil while the amp is on. Listen for weird noises indicating that the tube MIGHT be microphonic. Try replacing any tube that makes loud or squealing noises when you do this.

Usually pre-amp tubes last much longer than the power tubes but today's 12AX7's dont seem to have the toughness that the old ones did...

Other than this advice...try a total re-tube..

While I don't dismiss the lower wattage thing, there are two things to consider.

1. 30 watts and 50 watts is nothing more than a slight volume difference. Mostly in how loud you can with the clean sound. (keep that in mind)

2. The 30 watt is EL84 tubes and the 50 watt is 6L6 tubes. Those are vastly different disortion characteristics.

I would play it first. IMO EL84 is one of the best tubes for disortion in rock amps, but if you like the shimmering clean sound sometimes, along with that top end clarity in your disortion, 6L6 can't be beat.

If you take it back and get a hybrid amp....we are all going to start making fun of you again. You don't want that do you? :p j/k

That would be like the time I was banging this swimsuit model for about a month and then we split up and I had to go back to porno and lubriderm.

Sad. Just sad.

Keep the Mesa!

okay here is an update. I went to guitar center and it didn't make that noise. I came home and then realized it was my guitar after troubleshooting. It's not the electronics of the guitar either. It's the strings like resonating or something. I tried my friends guitar and same thing. I never noticed this before though. I put my ear up to the neck of the guitar and played an E5 staccato and then it made that noise. That's really the only time it does that. Anyone else notice this on their guitars? How can I fix this problem? I recently changed strings, so this is the first time I played though the tube amp with new strings. I'm not sure what to do about this..

I tried my other amp and it does the same thing..wierd how I never noticed.. think raising the action would help?

I'm going to try and pretend I didn't just read you slandering porn.

ericlingus: does you guitar, by chance, have a tremelo? You are describing the sound of the springs vibrating to a "T," to a point that it is the first thing I thought of.

HAHA!!!!! I WAS RIGHT!!!! Sorry but I'm so rarely right, I had to brag. Go back and read my initial response.

no it doesn't have one. It's a shecter c1 xxx guitar. Yeah, pluck the string before the nut or after the bridge and you'll hear exactly the noise i'm describing.

yeah that is what I figured. I'm glad it's not the amp or anything that seems serious. But this noise is fucking annoying!

Can you make the same noise by turning a tuner? A string will "pink" if it is caught in the nut slot, and a bit of pencil lead would help. Maybe you could post a clip of the offending noise?

Phew!

Now, no more playing dress up with your Mesa Young Man!
If you must deck an amp in drag, disgrace the Behringer!
