since no one wanted to answer my questions on the other board...

is it possible to run pro tools LE (with an mbox as the interface) with an extra preamp? i'll be damned if i'm doing 2 room mikes forever with this thing...

if so, how can i rock this piece out?

Well, the MBox only supports two inputs. So, you could certainly use external preamps and/or a mixer to increase the number of sources. However, you'll still have to combine it (submix) it down to two channels to record. So, for example, if you wanted to record a drum kit with multiple mics, you would have to run them all through a mixer (EQ'ing and Panning appropriately) and send the stereo outs from the mixer to the MBox ins. There is no way with that interface to take 8 sources and simultaneously record them to 8 channels in ProTools. Hope that answers your question.

you can use any external preamp you want....however you're still only going to be able to record 2 tracks at a time.

----edit---
ah, beat me again scrub :p

ahh, so i have to submix before i go into the preamp... that's ultimately weak. i would need to compress before going into the mbox i suppose... that's ultimately weak.

Yeah, it's best to understand the limitations of your gear before purchase. But I don't think you necessarily need to compress on the way in to the Mbox inputs. And the preamps on it are actually pretty decent.

i'm only doing low quality demos for pre-production for my solo project (www.myspace.com/suchgreatspeeds). i have a few self-produced demos up there at this time (you'll be able to tell which ones they are). i don't really need 12 mikes on my drumset for this, so it's not a big deal. it's more about affordability and being able to mike up my guitar setup.

HD isn't the next step up
you've got the 001 and the 002

i know, i used mix plus for my cd. i'm just saying, having HD would be so nice.

No! Not the overpriced, underspec'd, no-midi-ports M-Box! After all, it's called 'protools'! It MUST be professional!

mustn't it?

FLMAO, you could have gotten the Pro Tools M-powered and a delta interface with more inputs for about the same money as that M-box! I say if it is not a mix plus or an HD pro tools is a rip off!

M-powered just came out. but you're right....i'd go with a delta too. those PCI cards fit perfectly in my laptop for those on the road recordings...and the wonderful absence of preamps on all but one of the models is great for recording my vocals!!

and it's called Pro Tools!!?
man, Logic must be logically layed out I guess
and Nuendo must have all the Newest stuff
and Power Tracks must make your tracks powerful
and Cubase must be the base of the audio world
and Cool Edit Pro must be Cool and Pro since it's got both in it's name
and Walmart must only sell walls
and MasterCard is probably the best credit card to use
and Apple probably grows fruit
and Pro Tools must be pro

If you're going to bash pro tools for the "entry" level m-box then don't forget to bash mackie for the piece of shit that is Spike. Doesn't give you anymore than the m-box, actually less because Traktion sucks and its only 40 bucks cheaper than an m-box. DigiDesign isn't the only one overcharging for crap. Sorry one edit, Spike does have midi, but for someone like me not having it isn't a big deal.

Big talk from a non-user.

Tracktion will work with any interface in the Mac or PC world, while protools is still expensively restricted.
