My Latest Project - 703 Panels

if you've seen one, you've seen them all, but here are pics of my latest project. 6 2'x4' 703 panels, wrapped in burlap. it was fun. thanks for more than a year of HR/bbs to teach me that this was a better bet than Auralex or "bed padding".

my spare room/office is 8'x9' with 8' ceilings. not so great to work in, but as far as music, i'm only using this space for tracking hip-hop vocals. i mix with headphones and do QA of the mixes in my car and on others' monitors.

i spent a total near $130-140, but it was fun and they look pretty nice. a BIG thank you to Bryan (bpape) for shipping the 703 cheaper than anyone else. http://sensiblesoundsolutions.com/ . he was very helpful and kind too.

parts:
(10x) 1"x4"x8' pine boards (actual size: .75"x3.5") - $3.29/board @ Lowe's
(6x) 2" 703 Rigid Fiberglass - $95 after shipping, i think
(1 box) 2" wood screws - $2, Ace Hardware
finishing nails, free - father-in-law
(10-11 yards) burlap fabric - $1.97/yd @ WalMart
staple gun and 3/8" staples. price? i had them around.

Steps:
1. measure twice, cut once. cut all boards to length for frames.
2. predrilled and screwed frames together
3. laid 703 in frame (photo 4) and added small blocks just in case it tried to move on me. blocks made from cut scraps of 1x4's.
4. cut burlap to length. width was perfect from store (35"). wrapped burlap and stapled to back of frames.
5. vacuumed finished panels for dust/dirt/loose fibers.
6. still need to hang them.

for the pics...

still need to post them when after i hang them. but i just finished covering them last night. don't expect miracles. :p

nice work, looks like an assembly line...you apparently got the procedure down and have increased quantity.

simple directions, sounds easy.
so your saying $130-140 for 6qty?

yeah. i ordered parts of the project at different times.

$93.73 for the 703, shipped. that was the most expensive part. the next expensive, but not really, was the pine boards. i chose the nice ones that weren't warped, and like i said above, they were 3.29 each. so that was $33. after that were odds and ends, like wood screws. i just moved, so some stuff i had, others i didn't, and some i could swear i had but couldn't find when it came time to build.

this project, for all 6, could easily be done in a day. i think it took me 2 or 3. a helper would be nice too. i made the frames on day 1 and/or 2, and once they were made, it only took me 2 or 3 hours to wrap and staple.

Looks great.

I wish the shipping wasn't so expensive. It's just gotten silly for oversize boxes like that in the last year. The gas prices are an excuse for the shippers to jump their rates.

yeah, it sucks. i used to work for FedEx, my wife still does, and i know they make a buttload of money from shipping costs.

FINISHED! and lookin sexy. i can already tell a big difference, but my ears are so NOT used to this it's kinda funky not hearing echos from claps and snaps.

one final picture...

this one i was able to take the once-useless hangers for a door mirror from walmart and screw them to the back of the frame and hang a panel from the back of the door when it's shut. i feel special. :D

real nice work,,billy..

now you need to make some corner traps and you will be good...

nice work

i just used 2 screws for each panel and left them (screws) out of the wall about an inch and hung the panels like you would a picture frame - only no wire or hangers on the frames themselves. i guess you'd call that free-hanging frames? i'd like to eventually get some L-brackets and offset the panels from the wall about an inch or 2.
