My last ever trip to Guitar Center....

In detroit, Mi they are good. Some are not really knowlegable, but they let you play what ever you want. I don't want people bugging me when I am looking around anyway.

The guitars I like are too expensive anyway, PRS, Les Paul.

The returns girl at my guitar center is so lushious (sp?) I get all tinglely when she ask if she could have a look in my bag? Other than that I just go there for entertainment or thirty dollar banjo picks.

Pull the old popcorn trick on her. When she reaches into the bag, there will be a hard, warm "mic" for her to play with.

I recently discovered that you have to be aggressive at GC. Interrupt their pal talks and let them know you know more than them and they will respond. Call their bluffs on sales BS and generally treat them like slaves. I love the idea of unplugging crap and twisting knobs...Im gonna have to try that. Then when the first sales dude walks in, mumble "what dipwad salesgeek wired this"

SoMm

I've found the best way to get service in ANY store, is to walk towards the front door rather quickly. Looking suspicious. Then right before you get to the door, scream "SHOPLIFTER!!!"

You'd be surprised how fast you can get a manager. Now, that you have his/her attention, calmly ask for assistance and pretend like nothing unusual took place.

The messing with expensive stuff is a good method too. Combining the techniques would be a sure fire way. And hell, if it doesn't work, just keep going. If they can't be bothered to sell it, then you shouldn't be bothered to pay for it.

BTW- This is NOT an endorsement of stealing, or shoplifting, just a case of extreme needs warrant extreme measures.

The tale tell Guitar Center...

I walk into mine in Houston, with a couple of (what I thought) easy questions and I swear, this is direct dialog...

"I'm trying to hook up my keyboard, that I purchased here, to my midi port, that I purchased here, and then to my software, that I purchased here."

"Uhh. Wha?"

"OK. You have this already setup on your demo system. Could you unplug your keyboard, and plug in that one (pointing to my model) and show me how to configure the software, and keyboard so that I can record a MIDI track?"

"Uhh. Wha?"

"This is the Pro Audio Department isn't it? Do you work this department?"

"Yo. Check it. But, I cans't be jackin' up the demo setups 'G'."

"Do you have a manager that can assist me, please?"

"Yea, yea. I am da managaa."

"Is there anybody here that can help me with this?" (Irritation in voice.)

"Man, dude. Yea, maybe. But that MIDI is old tech, dawg. Everybody now's, goin' to EBS/ACU (Yea, he got the initials wrong.) You checked out the new Mics we's got in?"

He starts walking to the mic counter. (Prick)

At this point, things become ugly. All those with a weak stomach, please pass up this post.

My eyes became quite fuzzy. I approached him at the mic counter, and asked him to show me a B.L.U.E. Dragonfly "cause I heard I can get good rhymns out of it." He hands me the BLUE and I throw it on the floor in front of him. Shocked, he bends down to pick it up and I grab his mangled head and begin pounding it into the cabinet. Like a madman, I begin screaming, "IDIOT ON COUNTER 5! IDIOT ON COUNTER 5!"

And, like any cheesy '80s B movie scene, the fog clears and I realize that is was just a momentary fantasy.

As quick as my two little feet could carry me, I ran from that useless waste of flesh.

I return only on the big sale, be there before we open, everything must go, days. F@#ers are too busy behind the counter to mess with me and I get to pick the bones of last years stock.

acorec, I like the way you think. I'm keeping an eye on you.:D

Oh, I forgot. If you are in the Guitar dept, bring a screwdriver with you and start unbolting Fender Strat necks. Tell 'em you are just checking who signed this vintage piece. That will get you service.

Yeah, I had a "horrible" time at my local music shop- Victor Litz.
I go in at like 11am on a Wednesday, and ask this kid some technical questions about flash memory cards for the Fostex MR8 digital multitracker- and this guy has the nerve to say "hmmm, I don't know. Let's go to the computer and check on line" and then proceeds to dig around their website for like 10 minutes until he finds something! What a jerk!

So I bought the Mr8 ;)

How's if F@# Hangin' JR?!?

Why didn't anybody tell me the party's over here? Ah, I got it. Ya'll couldn't find a way to get me off the RecWeb, so ya had Dan shut it down, Nimbus open it up, and everybody comes over here.."Shhshshshhh!!!!! Don't Tell BC!"

Thanks, man. Thanks...

Blind Cowboy...

PS. Hey Mr. Johnston. You'd be amazed what a blind man can see, a deaf man can hear, and a mute man can say...

Recweb is shutdown? No way! Damn. So much for my being the gold member there. I haven't checked in since the Detroit Inst. switchover. What happened? I got bored with the lock-thread happy ways over there. Plus, there wasn't much going on. Newbie stuff and that's about it. I've been over here for over a year. Much more action and I don't have to worry about being so "reverent". Welcome aboard.

Expecting good service from GC is like expecting good service from Wal Mart.

Ok I said I wouldn't go back.... But I did. I needed about three guitar stands for the new studio..

There was this lovely young lady working the guitar department and she was VERY helpful.

I will only go when she is there. ;)

Oh and the pro audio section still sucks.

Scott, just as an experiment, I went to McMarkup on Page and basicly repeated your experince yesterday. About the only local store I like anymore is Fazio's.

DDDDAAAMNNNNN I was trying like hell to think of the name of that place!

That is the one on Manchester.. I bought a few things from them a couple years ago and had no bad experiences.. I totally forgot bout them..

I think McMurray is hurting a bit from the two Guitar Centers..

P.S. Do you know of anyone around town that is a reputable guitar setter upper? I have a Strat and a Tele that needs a settup.. The Strat needs a setup from scratch..

?

hehehee! Man,,,that would get you beaten up or arrested,,,
or BOTH,in Glasgow!

hehe...great forum. i always find that i get the best service when i don't shave, and wear "i'm cooler than you" clothes. then i ask a question about a peice of gear that they surely won't know the answer to, and never ask for thier opinion. if they think you are smarter then them, they'll treat you that way. constantly looking at a cell phone or palm pilot doesn't hurt either

if you're in the guitar department NEVER EVER EVER play:
stairway to heaven
smells like teen spirit
pride and joy
or any metallica

this will get you looks of "so this kid just started guitar 6 months ago and want to try to show off what little talent he has"

and don't play slap bass unless you can really play slap bass. it just makes you look silly :)
