In most cases, people want to make money.
I'm sure that's true, and typically the case. If it costs money, most people won't bother, just like you said.
I'm not typical, though.
The Davemania project is still in the fabrication phase of Edition 2, soon to be finished and posted, and when all is said & done, I'll have shipped approximately 50 4-cd sets, [appx 200 discs], full length, each complete with jewel case and cover art.
You're right, I'm not doing the typical thing people would do. That's part of what makes the DAVEMANIA project so different, and so successful.
BTW, I don't measure my musical or artistic success by dollars and cents. Others might, and that might be typical, but I don't, and I'm not typical.
Don't expect me to be average or typical, at least not in regards to this.
I think giving music away, even at my own expense, is a good thing, as long as people listen. I know that's not typical. You, and a lot of other people would not bother doing what I've done.
Again, as far as I'm concerned, being free to the listeners is part of what makes the DAVEMANIA project so different, and so successful.
I'm not in music to make money, but that's just personal preference. I can afford to give it away, but that's just me, and I know it's not typical. Most people wouldn't bother trying to give anything away, especially if it cost them money out of their own pocket, and I know that, and can accept it for what it is.
I think people who focus on their own home-recording music, as if there's any commercial, money making potential in it, are making a mistake, in general.
Royston, if it costs you money out of your own pocket to promote and spread your own music around to people, then you wouldn't bother, and that's realistic, and 'typical'. You wouldn't bother, doing what I'm doing, and that's ok.
On the other hand, if I saw the average home recordist, promoting his music, and asking me to buy it, then I wouldn't bother.
So, by definition, our attitudes on this subject are exact opposite,... and that's ok, too.
