The simple answer is that you can achieve whatever you want to achieve with certain limitations such as the functionality and quality of your gear, your own skills and ears... and the talent possessed by those you wish to record.

What do you wish to achieve? Do you want to record your dog barking so you can load it into a sampler and make it sing happy birthday to you? Do you want to make Hi-Def SACD symphony orchestra recordings? Pod Casts? What?

You can achieve a lot with just a computer and a basic sound card and mic. You can also record the biggest load of shit with the greatest gear in the world.

Your skill determines how good you'll sound a lot more than your gear. That gear is fine, you can make some great recordings with it. If you know how. That stuff is a lot better than what's on my gearlist, and I get satisfactory results with my junk.. I totally acknowledge that my limitations are ME and not my gear.

Blasphemy! As a purist, I can say without question, that the only acceptable way is to get the dog to record the whole thing in one take, with no overdubs. Practice! Practice! Practice!

That would assume he either has a very talented dog or very tolerant neighbours, neither of which seem to be terribly common.

Why are you posting essentially the same question in various sections of the BBS?
