Hey man
I use a 1st gen macbook (2Ghz, upgrade to 2GB RAM with 80GB harddrive)
I record direct onto my macbooks hard drive via Logic Pro THEN transfer across to my USB external drive.
Had no problems whatsoever

Yeah I'm also curious why the Duet doesn't work for you?
As far as using Logic, a good solution is to start with Garageband. If you are just starting to record on a MAC, Garageband has the essential basic interface that Logic does and of course, comes free with the OS. It may be easier for you to get accustomed to GB first, so that transitioning to Logic is more natural. That way, if you find you don't enjoy the Apple interface, you haven't dropped a bunch of money on the software.
