Well, not really my first song, but the first song of mine that I've tried to complete.

Lets just say I wouldn't want to anyone to hear most of my other stuff because it's quite sloppy. This song has it's flaws too, but it's the "tightest" (as in not sloppy) song I've recorded to date.

Also, keep in mind this is one of only a few songs that I've tried to add vocals to.

Anyways, take a listen, and tell me what you think...good, bad, or otherwise.

the song

This is one of those tunes that just gives me fits from a "critiqueing" standpoint. The song's cool, from a dynamic and melodic standpoint...I really like it, actually. And the production IDEAS are very cool, but I don't think you're getting the sounds you want. Like the clean guitars at the beginning, they sound too direct and in your face for me...no warmth, but I have no idea how to fix it. The distorted guits have no balls at all. I'm totally guessing, but were they recorded direct, through some kind of a distortion pedal? The vocal's pretty cool, but it sounds thin too...like maybe somebody else could tell you how to thicken it up, I can't.

Anyway, welcome aboard...I hope somebody else can be more helpful. And are you "winstonpisces?" :D (if you're not, ignore it).

Later,
Chris

You were dead on...I am recording the guitars direct. Here's what I used to record the song:

digitech rp21d preamp/processor for the guitar
roland v-club for the drums
radioshack mic (no laughing!) running though a danelectro daddyo

All of that is run to a cheap four channel level mixer so I don't have to fight with setting stuff up everytime I want to record. The mixer is then run to a soundblaster audigy soundcard.

So now you know why the song sounds so "blah." Running the guitar direct is pretty much the only option for me from a noise standpoint. As for the radioshack mic...I just recently started trying to record vocals, and with lack of money right now there's not a way I can get a decent mic and preamp. Also, I don't have a bass, so that's probably another reason the song sounds so bland.

Yeah man...a bass would definitely help. I didn't even notice the lack of an actual bass until you said that. You did a pretty good job of getting some low end from the guitars, but the most OBVIOUS problem (i.e., the one that I totally missed) is the lack of a bass. LOL...Like I said, hopefully others can help more.

:D

It's still there and the link is working for me....anyone else having problems with the link?

Whoops. My fault. The link is fine.

I like this one a lot. When it kicks into the heavy part, it gets a little muddy - the voice gets a little lost. I'd also like to hear a little more done with the drums. Maybe some compression to give them a little more oomph. But these are minor complaints. It's got a cool lo-fi sound that really works fine.

This kinda has a John Lennon feel to it at the beginning. I really like the way it starts off with that guitar sound and all and then that beginning vocal sound is cool. The song kinda loses me a little bit when the distorto axes come in. I have never been a big fan of scooped mids, but that is just me. I am glad you are starting to add vocals because you have a good style. I gotta say it is a clean recording and I really think that a bass would kick it up a notch when the distorted guitars come in.

Bro;

I downloaded this tune and it's a great concept and there's nothing wrong with your vox at all.

What you need is either a Bass or a Bass player. Then you you need a lil Mixer like the Behringer MX802A and a good Mic or two.
