My first recording was a radio shack mic on a book shelf and headphones on a kiddy chair for the kick all into a minidisk my brother never uses. It sounded like i pooed in a basket.

Ok, now I understand Adobe Audition a bit more and found a solution to listen to the other tracks and record the guitar straight in the computer. The catch: my guitar is going straight in the m-audio.
My Fender Frontman 212R has a Preamp Out that is supposed to be used in recordings as can be seen here http://723634aa8cde73188d4661bb3fe81ce4.diplodocs.com/external_download5.php. But nothing happens when I put the cable in the preamp out and the other end of the cable in the guitar input of my firewire solo. The sound still comes from the guitar speakers, nothing in my computer, nada, blank,...I wish I was blank.

Sometimes those preamp outs have their own volume control, and other times your preamp volume will be the only control you have. If that's the case, and you're keeping that preamp low to avoid killing your neighbors with a 100w 2x12, you might just not be sending enough into your interface.
In other words, you're turning your amp down because it's a big amp, but your amp's volume control might be the only knob you've got for controlling the preamp out.

i think his sound was going into the computer fine.. he said he could see the waves being written...
go into preferences in audition and audio/hardware setup or something like that i can't remember off the top of my head and make sure the output is set to the m-audio. if it's still set to the internal sound card it won't work, so check that.

oh yeah... and my first recording sucked too. to record the acoustic guitar i took a usb headset with a mic and took the ear with the mic off and taped it to the soundhole with the mic sticking under the strings into the hole.
the thing was, i actually DID think it was awesome at the time.
somehow i recorded vocals to, but i have absolutely no idea how i multitracked it. that was a long time ago.

Ok, I am so EXITED right now. You might have given me the solution. It feels like you were in my office, took a look at my amp and then read my thoughts. I have the am volumes, both, very low 1.8 for the clean and drive because this amp is QUITE loud.
Now I can't wait to go back home after work and try this out. thanks a bunch.

Bigtex you totally know your stuff; I didn't want to say shit because you might be offended!
I came back home and pumped the gain not of my amp but of the FireWire solo. I did this because if I turned the volume of the amp (as I did just to test and it worked as you said) my landlord would kick my Brazilian butt out off this apartment. The guitar volume was at its maximum too. These settings gave Adobe Audition plenty of signal to record audio straight from my Fender into my laptop.
Later I will write all the connections I have and the settings in Adobe Audition so if another newbie comes with the same problems this solution might help.
Thanks to everybody who gave me bits and pieces of info.

You're not alone.
If it is your first recording and it sucks, don't worry. My first recording was so bad even "I" refused to listen to it Patience and a lot of practice will get you the best results. Not to mention all the talented people here who can help you a hole lot more than I can.
