Hey

I bought this used Tascam 244 and this is my first song made with it.
I was so happy I managed to get something like this that I put it on the web so here it is.

The problem is that I mixed it down to a computer without cd-burn equipment so I had to put it into a floppy disk :( , so I had to choose this f_cking bad quality (40 Kbps) and even my trying to fix it later didn't really work, but the idea is still very clear.

PLease give me your reactions, not nessecarily about the song, I know it's not very outstanding, but preferely about the production.

Anway, I'm very proud of it :)

Hi Fucksia, I checked it out. Good job, the piano sounds great.
The Drums sound like they are in a pillow, they need to be louder and brighter. The string synth stuff could be louder too. Nice Job.

hey, i like it man. The piano sound awsome, drums have to come up a lot, and they do (as david said) sound muffled. But other than that, good job!

Tres manifique, great job on the keys. ;)

Unfortunately, I have the same response as the last 2 posts. :(

You need to put some more energy into those drums.

But, again great job done on your first track.

Hmmmm...... I don't want to be rude but some perspective is needed here and you're better off getting the straight goods in the beginning and learning from it than getting a false impression...

The piano performance was excellent... minor timing issues on the drums. Overall, performance is a thumbs up!

Mixing and sound quality is a whole different matter. The piano certainly was the best recorded track in that recording, but it falls significantly short of what is possible even on a small PortaStudio format. A good mic and preamp will do wonders on those excellent piano chops!

The other tracks were (sorry!) hideous from a recording point of view - muddy, indistinct, undefined. You should be able to pick out each individual drum element, and if there were any other instruments in there (bass?), it's impossible to tell! All elements of the mix should be clearly defined and audible.

As I said you have the performance chops (or is that "Chopin??", heh-heh) down, now you need to concentrate on you recording chops!

Not too bad for your first time around, but you are working well below the capabilities of your modest setup... hang around here and pick up lots of tips - your recording abilities should improve in no time!

Thanx

Thanks so far for all the reactions.
I guess a reason of this quality is that I had to convert it to an 80 Kpbs Mp3-file, but it's quite a reflection of the original mix, so thanks for the comment, I like them to be honest.

I haven't got a bass-guitar around always so I played the bass with my Roland RD-500, could sound indeed a bit too unhuman (don't know if that word is in the English vocabulary, I'm dutch and English is one of my worse spoken languages).

And I would like some reactions on the guitar-part. I didn't put a mic on the amp like I 'have to do' if I read all these FAQ's etc. on this site, but just used the Line-Out of the amp (a cheap Marshall) and plugged it direct to the Tascam with a lot of distortion. I don't really know what to think about it. Can I do this a lot better by mic'ing it? Got other tips?

Thanks a lot
Maarten.

PS> I hope you'll notice the guitar part at all :D. Especially in the parts with the Hammond and in the ending of the song I turned the guit a bit louder.
