Shure SM58 for your first microphone. Rugged enough to perform live and can be used in a studio.
If you want a good quality mic go for a condenser, but they wont last in a live environment. The SM58 is also great for recording Snare drums. Its an allrounder, but is not as hi quality as a good condenser for a specific frequency range. but its really cheap compared to others.
Make sure if you are recording your own vocals you check the frequency response of each microphone and make sure they cover your range especially your lowest note/the octave you sing in most. Again go for a condenser.
You can use condensers live too if you make sure to take care ofthem. plenty of people do and they sound way better. but first mic I would always recommen d an sm58, as even when you moove on if you break a mic you have the sm58 to fall back on. NB SM57 SM58SE are not the same, and shops try to sell you these instead sometimes.
