My first mic choices

I recently picked up a Yamaha AW16G and now need some mics to start recording. I am not recording anything fancy, just some guitar riffs and vocals to start piecing together some songs.

I am looking at the E609 to mic my guitar cab and the SP B1 for acoustic guitar and vocals.

I can afford to buy more expensice mics, but for what I am doing and being new I think those would be great. Any other suggestions?

Yeah... the Marshall MXL V67G for acoustic guitar and vocals.

Any of the mics mentioned would work fine for what you are doing. Your best bet would be to try as many as you can to find one that works best for you. I've always thought of the V67 as mostly a vocal mic. I wasn't crazy about the sound on acoustic guitar (YMMV). The B1 sounds great on guitar, but is not always the most flattering vocal mic (again, YMMV). You might also consider a Sennheiser MD421 for guitar cabs. It's a studio workhorse. It's also one of DJL's favorites.

Sounds like a good start although you might want to consider a Shure SM57 for the cab because it can also double as a vocal mic.

You'll probably need a preamp with the Yamaha.

Thanks guys. I considered the SM57 first for the cab. From what I read on here for micing cabs they were pretty dead even, with the 609 getting a slight edge for it's shape and design.

The AW16G does have phantom power, so would I still need a pre amp?

No... the AW16G has a built-in preamps.

The AW16G does have pre-amps but they are not it's best feature, especially with dynamic mics. Also the AW16G only gives you 2 channels of phantom power.

but he only needs one channel of phantom power with the mics he intends to buy so it should be alright

hahaha and this is where it starts...the GAS Kenny mentioned. First it's the pre that's not good enough, then that converter's going to start to sound fuzzy, then the monitoring path won't be good enough...then your kids will have to move out so you can convert their bedrooms into a full fledged studio with a nice window between them.
