OK I just got my first Les Paul.

Is it typical to play with the toggle switch in the middle, utilizing both pickups? That's what sounds best for me.

I find it weird that with the toggle in the middle... when I turn down one of the volume knobs all the way I get no sound. thought I'd still get a little something from the other pickup.

That's because one volume knob is for one pickup, and the other volume knob is for the pickup. Do whatever sounds best to you.

With the toggle in the middle, i get no sound if one of my volume knobs is all the way down. Is this normal or is my guitar wired like a hackjob?

No, its the normal operation of a Gibson whether its a les Paul, SG, 335, Firebird-whatever. I used to set one volume low and flip to the bridge pickup for lead breaks-the middle position would be just right for the lower rhythm sound.

I still remember the first day with my LP. I say this all the time but its true: I love it more every time I play it. IMO, that's how everybody should feel about their guitar.

I like the middle position for that kind of thinner funky sound sometimes, but I mainly use either pickup instead of both. I just love playing on the neck pickup and flipping it over to the bridge and hitting a power chord...sublime.

I love having independant volume controls for each pickup too, so I can dial in a good crunch at full volume on one pickup and dial the other back for a nearly clean sound.

LPs are so much fun!

boy, i heard THAT loud and clear. there are just some things a les paul can't do--such as sound like a strat. and there are some things a strat/tele just can't do--such as sound like a les paul. and heaven forbid you find you need one of those tele customs (the one with humbuckers) for something.

the longer i do this and as more and more years pass by, the more i find i need one of each. until i got a smokin deal on my 83 strat, an 80's les paul was in the works. now it's on the back burner again til later this year.

anyway, congrats! play it like there's no tomorrow. :D

To my ear, the Telecaster Deluxe can give a Les Paul a run for it's money. Of course that all depends on the usual factors, such as the player, the amp/speaker or combo. My Les Paul wouldn't sound anything like a typical Les Paul, since mine has the P90s instead of humbuckers. By the way, the Telecaster Custom is the one configured bridge single/neck humbucker. That one's for those that can't quite afford an American Telecaster HS, but want better than a Squier Fat Telecaster. Although it's a ways away from a Telecaster Custom, I still like my Squier, so I don't really need the Fender.

congrats. on your first les paul... tell us more about it please ... what year is it ?? what color is it ?? what model is it ?? what amp are you running it through ?? what style of music ?? how mutch did you have to give for it ?? :D

This is what I tell my wife all the time she complains about all my guitars...

This les paul has P90s and doesn't sound like -
This les paul that has humbuckers. Neither sound like -
This tele deluxe that has much different sounding humbuckers.. but it sounds nothing like -
This regular tele with single coils. I need -
this strat because it has really neat lace sensors that take distortion well, but again it doesn't sound like -
this regular strat!

Lets not even start about my acoustics and jazz boxes...
