a spoonfull weighs a ton
I haven't been able to up/download anything for a while, but we finally got back on line last night! Yippee! Also I have a new toy. CakeWalk Guitar tracks- it's ok- well I don't know any better so I'ts great!! I recorded Guitar and vocals with a RodeNT-1 thru an ART Tube MP into whatever the soundcard is in this HP Pavilion. I did the guitar in the bathroom (it's not tiled it's just loud and my little junior dreadnought needs all the help it can get!) and I did the vocals in our hallway (5' x 10' with one wall exposed brick) There seems to be a little bit of an early reflection problem goin on, but...
This is'nt mixed really- the mixdown option on Guitar tracks just combines the tracks to two (whatever they mean by realtime is not...) (oh well it's not like I paid for the software)- I haven't figured out how to mix it myself on the computer. I guess I'd need a CD burner or another program (??) But anyway the mix is ok cause it's just guitar and voice, not too involved. This is only half the song! the whole is 10:37 but the out is pretty involved and it's not quite done... (I'll post that section later- it's beautiful, droning, and trippy- what else would you exspect from me?) I'll probably redo some of the falsetto lines in this section. Back when I wrote this song when I was 19, my voice did this cool kinda cracking thing on that part which I can't do any more, it used to be much higher. (if you listen carefully it's almost like two voices when i change notes- i don't know what I'm doing so I can't explain it!)
the download is like 2.3 MB- not too bad- it shouldn't take too long (i hope)

well anyway her it is (sorry if I'm talkin your ears off)

later guys

PS I'm on spring break now so if I dissapear for a few days again It's cause I'm finishing the bands demo down at the farm. (I wish i could take the computer with me, but :( I guess the four track will have to do)

Well I noticed that the files on the web page was smaller than the file on my hard disck, so I downloaded it and guess what- It didn't up load the whole thing! (Must've timed out) the clip is missing about 70 seconds or so cutiing out the second verse and chorus- sorry guys- I'd fix it now but I don't have time... I don't mean to be a tease... really...

Hey James the new mic & pre sounds great on your voice! Money well spent I think. Huge difference between the sound of your earlier posts and this. Good job man! Aside from the problems you've already mentioned, it sounds good.

All I heard was a few seconds of acoustic...no vocals...is it my comp????...gibs

Hey,

Liked Neatide very much, killer playing all around. First thing came to mind, it would sound awesome with a flute, no kidding. Nice recording too. Keep up the good work.

That new digital recording passed the Marilyn test. Ain't that Rode NT One-der-ful?
That sounded so clean. Now I'm aggravated that I've got several hours of domestic chores to accomplish before I can crank up the studio. By then the wind and rain will probably be back making it too noisy to record. Another weekend shot in the ass. :(
Keep up the good work.
And please avoid the temptation to go Phil Collins all over that piece. I'd go with a sparse flute and cello embellishment.

James that sounded very full and clean, that nt1 sure sounds great, i've got a AT4050 and I cant hear a 400.00 diff. the guitar really sounded nice too, good work!

I like that NT-1.

I liked it so much that I checked out prices for it. I was surprised. Thought it would be much more expensive.

Be sure to let us know when the completed song is available.

Question: How do you connect your ART TUBE MP to your sound card?

Do you convert the 1/4" to 1/8" with an adapter and plug it directly into your soundcard? Or out the XLR into a mixer?

(I'm assuming that the TUBE MP has a 1/4" and XLR outputs. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm thinking about buying one.)

The Tube MP has both 1/4 in. and XLR in puts and outputs. You can use both outs simultaneously but not both in's. (I tried it, It really screwed up the signal :D)
And yes I just use an 1/4 to 1/8 adaptor. (one of these days though I'm gonna solder me up some cables and throw my bag o' adaptors away!!)

James,
The voice is very upfront...sounds good!
I have never tried the RodeNT-1, but it sounds like a winner.

James,

How did you go about mic placement for this one? Both the guitar and the vocal sound so good! (After hearing this recording and seeing that the NT1 is rather affordable I'm seriously starting to think about buying one.)

But yeah, I'm curious how you positioned the mics.

For the guitar, I placed the mic about eight inches away from the guitar, a little above and on line with the soundhole. The mic is a little off axis, facing the neck at about a 15* angle. The secret weapon however is that I have the phase reversal switch on the tube MP on, which gets rid of some of the boom and evens out the overtones (the overtones aren't that pretty on my little fender- especially in my bathroom, it just depends on the guitar)why this is exectly I couldn't even tell you.

For vocals I was about 16" away from the mic.
dead on with the diaphragm. I don't have a pop filter (i need to get one though) so I had to be carefull about my P's!
