My first 24-bit try.......

Doug H, thanks for the advice.............i never would have considered that

I thought it sounded fine...16 or 24 bit...whatever. I personally don't think it matters too much...at this stage of the game for most of us. I also thought that there was a fair amount of hiss and background noise which imo, completely overshadows any benefits of 24 bit. I understand the ideas/theory behing a higher bit rate, of course, but to 99.99% of the listeners...and maybe even 99.9999% of the people doing an A/B comparision by walking in and out of the room and choosing... well... my point is you may hear a difference, but the listener, not knowing what the original really sounded like will never know. If we are talking golden ears listening to a [classical style] instrument like a piano, violen, etc... then the discrepencies would probably stand out more. On electric guitars thru a POD... I don't think so. A Tritone sample...nope.... Vocals thru a Art tube mp and a Marshall mic... probably nope again. I STRONGLY feel that the 16 bit VS 24 bit question is far down the list of importance for most home recordists. However, that said...with most equipment being sold with 24 bit capabilities and huge storage devices...might as well go for it. However...that said (again), I still believe that there are better 20 (or 16) bit converters that sound better than some 24 bit converters on the market now.

Powder:

Just a note of thanks,
Your tune “Whatcha Gonna Do” has had extensive air time in this house. Gotta ask, is it your song or a cover?

Anyway, my wife says it’s the best…………and she’s always right.

If it’s a cover: Great job on the sound, it has character and presence.
If it’s yours: You just wrote a classic man! Both me and my wife have been humming and singing that dam tune for days, in the local mall, gas station and all.

Alan.

Alan,

Thank you very much for the kind words about "Whatcha Gonna Do"...........it is actually a song that I wrote a little over a month ago.........not a cover. I'm really glad you're enjoying it as much as you seems to be.......it means a lot to me.

It's hard to think of people humming along to my songs and giving multiple listens outside of this forum.....I'm trying to re-group a band, so maybe some more people will be able to hear it.

git's sound good to me!!! an sm58 and bleed from the V93?, have you tried it the other way around?? sm58 for vox, V93 for git?? or hell, just multi track, and try to stereo mic the git with both?? i have experimented with a V93 AND AN sm57 as a stereo pair for acoustic's before, wasn't to bad:D but sluice is right, it's up to you!!! when i get the dough, im gonna snag a pair of 012's for sure!! anyway, just some thought's:)

and i will echo, "whatcha gonna do" is great!!!!!!!! i really like the in your face drum's on that tune!!

thank's man!

peace

rick

fenderlikin,

thanks for the reply. yeah, i have multi tracked before, but i prefer live performance if it is just solo acoustic.........i'll overdub if i'm gonna do more of a band track. also, i can't seem to get any good vocal sounds out of the sm58 compared to the v93. i think i might get the 012s tomorrow actually....

also, glad to see you like 'whatcha gonna do' too...........

Powder,

Don’t misread me here, when I said good, I meant FUCKING GOOD.
(Sorry to those of a Christian persuasion)
Let me put this in perspective, heres the track list of the CD that is my driving music.

Can’t get enough of your love (Bad Company)
All right now (Free)
Sweet home Alabama (Lynard Skynard)
Stuck in the middle with you (Steelers Wheel)
Rocky mountain way (Joe Walsh)
20th Century boy (T-Rex)
Commitments (Mustang Sally)
Freebird (Lynard Skynard)
Smoke on the water (Deep Purple)
Sharp dressed man (ZZ Top)
Kashmir (Led Zepp)
Brown eye girl (Van Morrison)
Someone like you (Van Morrison)

Whatcha Gonna Do (Yazoo Street Scandal)

Now I aint saying you’re the next Paul Rogers, what I am saying is you have wrote a hit. I seriously hope you do get your band back together and play this song to all and sundry.

Perspective #2 (not just my opinion)
Long story short, a good friend of mine here in Dubai is a promoter bringing all kinds of acts in from all over the world. He’s been in the “business” as they call it for 25 years and is a former member of a famous British band from the 70-80’s. By the way this guy has a studio that makes me weep every time I’m in there. Man it’s like NASA control, fuck Disney world, a day in this place is about as much fun as I can have with my pants on.

(I never do this, it’s a bit like asking Michel Angelo round to your house to check out the stenciling you done in the spare room)
Anyway, the point is he’s in my car and I put on a certain track (I tell him the story) the track ends………. silence……..he looks at me and says……….that kid might not know it, but that is a hit.

I rest my case your honor!

There is all kinds of great music coming from H.R.COM and I applaud everyone for what they do. People are creating music of a standard that is way above the mega means of the equipment they are using.

But few, if any will ever write a winner.
Guys I know that everything you do is a winner to you and a “personal” achievement in the true sense of the word. What I am referring to is the wider spectrum of commercial music.
Anyway, Powder (call me old fashioned but a real name works for me, I can’t get my head round referring to another guy as powder)

Careers have been launched from lesser stuff than this and I wish you good luck with it.

Go make it happen!

Alan.

Alan,
thanks a lot. check your PM box. i wrote you a longer reply, so check your PM so we can let this thread die..........

Sounds really good from here!
Man,that 93 is a sweet mic.

I'd say,if you are going to do songs mostly with the acoustic solo with the vox,it's worth a stereo pair.

If your going to use the acoustic in a dense mix,you probably don't need two.
Either double it,which sounds really full,or use a small cap with the 93 for stereo, that's what I do.

It's just a money thing,you know?
I bought one good small condenser, and havn't been able to convince myself I need another.

You could always buy one and see if you feel you need another.
If you buy a 012 from the soundroom,or a 184,I think they are consistant enough to buy another later for a pair, unless you really want a matched pair.
This is just my opinion,so take it for what it's worth!:D

I found a big differance between 16 and 24 bit.
24 is the way to go with acoustics especially, and you don't lose as much in processing and conversions.

Have a great holiday Powderfinger!

Pete

pete,
thanks for your input.......you're right about it being a cost thing with the 012s.........in my opinion, i only really need one, but guitar center is willing to give me 2 for $200 vs $150 for one......i think it might be a deal i can't pass up.............like you were saying, i might not even need to use both at the same time that often, but i might get them as a pair now instead of regretting it later

on another note, i like the 24 bit too......i'm definitely doing it on solo acoustic stuff, probably on full band tracks too........

i can't wait for my next recording......i just got a new dmp3 mic pre, and will hopefully get these 012s.......now all i need to do is write a new song...........

happy holidays to you as well
