My DIY mic shock mount project

Flailing up a storm.
Here are some shots of my first attempt at this project. I had to share it.

I have a moderately complete woodworking workshop, but this just used a bandsaw for the vast majority of the work. I've always liked the idea of using woodworking for practical manufacturing-- to make everyday items that are customized for things i want specifically or to make expensive things accessible. I thought i could probabaly hammer out a shockmount that functioned the same as the plastic and metal commercial ones, much cheaper and that looked better. This is my first attempt. Has many errors and spots that could use improvement in design or workmanshop, but I am pretty happy with the results on the Oktava 319.

Made from red oak, this one only needed about 1 board foot of 1x4inch from home depot. Common eyelets for the supension anchors, and machine screws and small nuts to hold the two circular brackets that attach to the mic- these could look much better. Simple idea, two wood brackets clamp around the body of the mic, cushioned with some rubber gasket material-this should also add a bit of dampenign tothe body of the mic (hopefully a positive). The mic and bracket float inside a ring with some thin bungy-cord material for suspension. if needed, i can loosen the bolts on the brackets to remove it, but that would be something of a pain, and will likely be avoided. The next ones i make will be more universally sized, and I will be able to pop the mics in and out pretty easily.

As a bonus you also get to see my totally rigged sewing hoop and nylon pop filter on a couple of these pics, with "gooseneck" made from plastic coated wire. Wrapped around itself about three times it atually both bends and stays put when needed pretty nicely.

PS - it even actually works! I can tap my foot and walk around the stand with the mic and unlike with just the lame clip, i really have to give it some trauma to xfer to the recorded signal.

Shock mounts are pretty cheap ya know... :D don't worry, I'm a DIY kind of guy too. That shock mount looks pretty cool, very well made.

Nice job, very clever and well done!Did it take long to make?

Yeah, shock mounts are dirt cheap.

But they are made of flimsy plastic, unlike this project. Looks very nice Daav!

THanks for the encouraging words.

This version took quite a while, as i was disigning how things fit together as i went and had to scrap some parts that did not fit, or were not as strong as I wanted (which means they broke :) ).

At this point, or if i had plans handed to me, i could knock this out in less than an hour for next to nothing.

I like working with wood. Just last week I came up with a plan to hide the pole in the middle of my live room. I knew I wanted to frame around it and slap up some drywall, but I just KNEW I could come up with some uses for the frame. I figured I might as well put outlets in it since it's in the middle of the room. Then I thought it would be really cool have a ledge half way up to set drinks or whatever on because setting drinks on amps is not exactly a great idea. Then I thought I'd even stick one more use into it, if I put enough 2 X 4 backing behind the drywall on the top half, I could put hooks on it and hang cords. Just last night I built the ledge out of oak, screwed it to the frame, and it looks GREAT! :) I'm proud of it. I should post a picture for you since you're talking about wood working.

It's a boutique mic mount. Market it as such with matching wooden storage box, make them out of Cherry or Mahogony, you'll make millions :D . Nice!

ill buy one, but only if it is a collectors edition

LOL you hit on my master plan. I may do just that. I need some extra cash to fund the 'ol gear habit anyway, someday i need to figure out the whole ebay thing, OTHER than spending money.

Those knobs are some pretentious shit! You'd have to be extremely full of yourself to buy those things.

Right, who wants me to build them a "sonically enhanced" acoustically resonant wooden mic shock mount for the mere price of... say.... $25,000.

You'll (almost) be able to hear the difference in your recordings!

Nice! 25 grand sounds like nothing for such a product!
