I'm recording my friend's band. They are fratboy/jazz/jam band/eclectic mix of stuff. Well, we managed to get 4 songs to tape this weekend, and just because i'm having such a good time i put up a quick stereo mixdown that we need to give to their percussionist who hasn't put his tracks on yet.

So this is the performance with all its warts and such. If you have the bandwidth and/or time i would appreciate what you think of the basic tracks, the file is 9.16Mb, 192kbps mp3 and the song is 6:40. I don't even know how it sounds really as i quick-mixed it and burned it to cd with that bassist for the past hour. Its passed midnight and i had the volume pretty damn low. but it seemed pretty represnetative.

I'll be working with them on a fill length cd all semester, we will be mixing these 4 songs in 2 weekends once the percussion is recorded.

I just wanted to add that this is from the master mix on my mixer at 16bit/44khz. I haven't dumped these tracks to the computer yet for mixing. So i guess its also a good way to see the bit depth difference worth answered, if you listen to this mix compared to one in 2 or 3 weeks.

Holy moly.

Ok, everybody has to listen to this. It's the Macle-killer, heh heh.

:D

I added (in winamp) 1k by 5.4 db, 3k by 9.8 db, and 14k by 5.4 db... seemed to add some clarity and "air"...

I love where the electric is, but I'm not too sure on the acoustic. Maybe bring the acoustic further inwards? Vox up a tad... maybe some repunches over 2:31 and 3:41 and the like... (oooh, 2:31 gets bad there)...

Vox up a bit, acoustic up a bit, maybe toms up a bit, bass up a bit. I don't know what to say, but I'd LOVE to play with the knobs, lol... what a great band to work with... the validation to that new equipment, Kristian...

GREAT wah work... AWESOME guitar work... TIGHT ASS BAND... You should stick with these guys for a while, Kristian...

Like that singer says... "That's good!"

*sulks off somehow humming "turns me ohhhhhhhhhhhhhn"*

Yeah these guys are pretty tight.

Bring up the vocals for sure. I don't really like the wah only being on the left side. I don't like the acoustic only being on the right side. I think if you put them stereo it would make the recording so much more full. The bass drum needs some EQ for sure. I kind of lose the drum overheads and think they ned to be louder or at least more prominent. This song sounds like a cross of Dave Mathews Band and Rusted Root. I am not personally into this kind of music that much though. I would love to hear this song when you get it mixed though. Also what do you use for software and hardware. Get rid of the "THATS GOOD."

I would try and get these guys to do something a little more mainstream. They sound like they are pretty good, but would only be able to play college bars and frat houses. Thats just my opinion.

"thats good" and all the other bad stuff will disappear. Its on 2 ADAT XT20s right now. I used a mackie 1604vlz, and 2 behringer composers (MDX2000). I will dump them to the computer with a MOTU 2408 and edit with Vegas 2.0, when im done... i can't wait to get back to work on it.

beeezoboy..... good golly, man, get a little GROOVE in your life. I couldn't agree LESS with what you've pointed out... except for the Rusted Root reference (although I'm not necessarily into RR or DM's stuff either, other than that first Gypsy King-sounding song at the beginning of one of the RR albums...). I don't mean to sound critical, but DAAAAANG how can you not enjoy this music? Hm...

So you haven't edited this at all on the computer Kristian? WOW. Again, great stuff... (can you tell this is a "topper" post? hehe)

:D

nice tune, and playing......long intro until the singing comes in. The change to the wah guitar was a little abrupt, and the snare drum is a little busy for me. I think this song has some decent potential, but admitedly, it sounds like a "push the faders up" kinda mix. ...real dry and it lacks *mixing polish*. I'll be eager to hear the perc. tracks and/on the final mix. .....let us know.

Dammit!

 Hit the reply button too soon:(

Anyway,

Nice job dude! I'm quite impressed with the job done on minimal gear. Sounds very energetic...like a bunch of guys doing it out of the love for it. The slapping five and YEAHS at the end are a testament to this.;)

If you don't mind me asking, how did you track? were there any overdubs there or was that all live? If it was all live, how did you isolate so well? What did you use for mics and what did you use the compressors on?

I think I've asked enough....nice job and very inspiring for a rough mix.

It was recorded with the drummer, electric guitarist, and bassist in one room to track those tracks first. But the electric guitar i had outside their practice space, and the bass DIed, so only the drums were in the room with them. the drums have a matched pair of Crown CM700s for overheads, SM57 on snare and middle tom, Sennheiser e604 on high tom and low tom, and a an Audio Technica DR2500 on kick, its from one of their old drumpacks. The guitar is an SM57, and the bass, again, is DIed. I have the compressors running on the kick, snare, the bass, and the electric guitar. I personally believe that trackig to digitial its important to lightly compress and/or limit the last 1~3dB.

Then we went back and doubled only a few guitar lines. They really like just making the bass, one electric, and one acoustic guitar lines stand out for themselves.

Next was acoustic guitar, which i miced mono with a AKG414 buls, into my mackie, and then compressed slightly to tape.

And finally the vocals, again through the AKG 414 buls.

Thanks for listening, I like when people give me feedback, and just take a listen. Thats what we're here for.

if you want to take a look at how it was done in pictures http://claygate.net/feb2002westlake.htm has it.

I'm just here for the overwhelming amount of WOMEN on the site.

Ok, call me dumb... what's the "buls" after the AKG 414 stand for?

"rock jedi/indie snob"... ROFLMAO :D

HA! What is it with home recording (and serial killing) that attracts 99.9% men?

It's gotta be an 'edowment' issue.... Men with little mic cables....

W.

Very good.........give the vocals a tad more clarity and compression.Tight rhythm section!

Preamps, compressors, mixers, recorders, etc are all extensions of the male sex organ.

yes, it was a rough mix, i will post the final version in a couple weeks.
