I'll be screwing around recording some tracks and come out with a nice sounding song. Then I'll mix but when I go to listen to it, it's to quiet.

I record direct into a Lexicon Alpha USB driver and it's a piece of junk. If I turn up the line in volume, I get some static and distortion. I can't really get a loud sound without some static.

How can I fix this? Is this my cheap USB interface because I'm looking into getting the Fasttrack pro. I have a plugin called blockfish that I use for a compressor but I don't think it's very good so what's a good compressor plugin.

I'm pretty sure that both the sound intereface and the cheap compressor have something to do with this.

Make sure your master is turned up as high as you can make it without it clipping before you save it.

As for plugins.. I would sign up at KVR audio. There are plenty of great plugins available for free there. You can decide on what different plugins you like, software synths etc using the free ones. From there you can decide which ones would be worth buying. I love the plugins that are free there. Some are pretty simple, but it's fun to have something new.

I used to have a Fast Track pro. I didn't buy it with the original intent of having an interface that was ProTools compatible, but it's always nice to have one even if there might be something better for the money. I eventually made the switch to ProTools and it helped to not need to get new hardware.
