Hi,
Very cool guitar! (I'm a sucker for vintage guitars.)
By any chance, did you actually mean '74 SG? (The block inlays, and bridge style, are from the 70's)
In any case, it's a great guitar. Have fun with it!

Take care,
Tony

A couple of the best guitars I've ever played were early 60's SGs. I bought one new in '99, and the fucker never stayed in tune, even after replacing the original machine heads with Grovers. I ended up selling it. If I can find a vintage SG, and a seller who doesn't have a clue about the 'vintage' market, I'll get one. Which reminds me of the 'ONE THAT GOT AWAY.' A friend had a SG Junior, '63, I think, and was willing to let it go for $250.00 CDN, as he was moving to Vancouver. That was in '92. Unfortunately, I didn't have a pot to piss in, and no one would lend me the money. That's what I got for being a broke, drug-addled professional student...

My first good guitar was a wine red 64 SG, that I refinished in brown stain (like a dummy).. sold it anyway...

My 64 had a different bridge and trapazoid inlays, not block....

Nice guitar dude....

Off-hand I'd say this was an early 70's SG.The blocks, the bridge, the wider peghead, the tuner buttons, all indicate an early 70's guitar.I've owned three SG's a 61, and two 64's.
NIce guitar though and yes the finish will fade fast if you play it a lot or leave it in the sun.

It doesn't look significantly different from my '98 model. The early models I played had whammy bars and the necks were ebony. Neck on mine was rosewood. Can't tell on that photo, though.

thanks for the hard knock...yeh, you guys are right--it's apparently an early 70's sg deluxe...I bought it in 76' for $365...at the time I had no appreciation for it's age-related value...I was too caught up in it's sound and how easily it played...it wasn't until 83' that I began to wonder about it's age...gibson's kalamazoo office said it was made in 64', but they were basing their info strictly on the six-digit ser #--which, according to the blue-book, does indicate 64' as the date of manufacture...problem is, gibson did quite a bit of ser# duplicating prior to 77'...as duely noted thru-out this thread, the bridge, block inlay, and headstock clearly indicate early 70's (I should have known that all those performers I saw in the 70's were using "new" guitars)...the clincher is the "made in usa" indent-marking under the ser#...apparently gibson used this indent on very few guitars prior to 71'...oh well, so my git got "ten years after" today...kind of a shock at first and I must admit that I feel kinda dumb that it took me so long to realize it's from the early 70's, but what the hell, it still kicks ass...

it's still a great guitar. enjoy it!

i saw a '60s SG in the classifieds at least 10 years ago in the classifieds for like $225-some old woman selling stuff her kid didn't want. i lament not picking up on that, though i was too young to make a purchase.
