mxl2001 woes...

as the post subject states......I used a mxl2001...and on vocals. Reason being, I have had some wonderful results with it, and it seems to suit the female singer I am recording with. However, on the RARE occasion, I get a *metallic* sounding "ring" to it. It doesn't happen all that much, but I have not been able to remove it with much luck using EQ, mic modeler, masking with reverbs, etc. Anyone have similar experiences? I guess basically, I am experiencing inconsistant sounds from day to day. Some punchins on a different session have been just about unusable. Yeah...I know all about humidity, temp, etc. ...but I have really tried to duplicate the setup as accurately as possible....same cables, pres, room location, ...everything. This mic has just seemed to be the most difficult to deal with in this situation. .....and the metallic sound??...anyone else??

Sounds strange...

...more like you are inadvertently re-patching an effect back into the track maybe????

I can't imagine where a metallic ringing would come from unless you aren't using a shockmount and the stand is rattling somewhere....

On the other hand, we are talking about an MXL2001 here - that COULD be it right there!

Yeah sound like it might be a feedback problem, the phones might be too loud.

I am monitoring with jbl4311's, and the isolation between the control room/tracking room is excellent The sound I am getting is not feedback (from headphones or anything else), and is actually very subtle. It does kinda sound like an out of phase signal added in...but the overall effect is much, much less. It is more like the sound of Cooledit noise reduction, when overused...kinda like a ringing, metal, sound...but stuck on one pitch...like a flanger not occilating...Infact, I don't really notice it that much when the track is solo'ed....and interestingly enough it seems more pronounced in the mix...which is leading me to question items involving other instruments...except for the fact that I can hear it when solo'ed. I am tracking single tracks at a time, and the vocal track is the only one using the mxl2001. and....many of the other tracks are direct inputs. ..like synths and guitars use the POD. I am not really that new to recording, so mistakes in patching, blah, blah, blah, I can rule out also. I guess Bruce summed it up..."it is a mxl2001" Just weird however, that it changes sound so much from day to day. I like the mic...but that 10th day of use seems to make that mic a real dud...while the other days it shines.

Are you sure it isn't actually flanging? Make sure you don't have anything arriving anywhere from two different signal paths.
