MXL V77 Tube Mics bringing high prices...

What's scary is that the V77 could probably be improved on, but it would de-value the mic. I have been looking for one at a reasonable price now for a while and they keep getting more pricey!

UK prices, that's not out of the ordinary at all. :(

Plus, that's the asking price. It hasn't sold yet. Still, I agree that the V77 is one of the better inexpensive tube mics, perhaps the gem of the MXL line.

its a buy it now, with or best offer. so it can only get lower than that price

WOW! I guess I was lucky, 'cuz I just bought one that a local music store had in the back of a display case, in the origional box (which was a colorful cardboard box) for $249.00!!!

I really like the sound of this mic. Warm yet clear.

When I talked with a guy at MXL, he said that they were considering doing a limited re-issue of the V77 and that if they did, the worth of my mic would go up.

It's a shame that these companies pull their products before people have a chance to really find out about them. This seems to be a trend that I've noticed on different forums- just about the time someone figures out there settup and want to grow to the next level, the company no longer offers certain products or add-on's.

Anyway, I've read mixed conclusions about what tube is actually in this mic and whether or not it's soldered into the socket. MXL say's that the tubes a 12AY7, but I've read in forums that it's a 12AX7. Some say the tubes soldered in and some say that it's just reallt tight in there and can be removed.

Does anyone know the truth of these matters?

Thanks in advanced for your help.

...the proper replacement is a GE 6072 or 6072A (high grade 12AY7)...there is a ceramic 9-pin mini socket available online for about $2.50 that allows you to modify the mic (if your soldering skills are up to par) so that you can successfully upgrade the tube...I've modify a couple with excellent results...if you need further info, IM me... :D

the day that i finally decided on ordering that mic, was the same time they discontinued it, probably the same week....

I doesn't really seem like that much for a decent tube mic. The CAD M9 is probably a nicer mic and retails new for $299. Most other "good" tube mics are quite a bit more.

Not dissin' the CAD but the 77 is in a different class, IMHO>

...I gotta go with BK on this one...CAD M9 "nicer" than the V77?...hmmm...certainly not in sonic terms...maybe in a "kinder, more gentle" way?... :D

...the V77 may be the best "bang-for-the-buck" mic to come out of China...with an NOS tube upgrade it rivals many microphones that cost 3-4 times the price... ;)

...actually, Scott at MXL told me the same thing over a year ago (and I offered to locate a quantity of vintage tubes to use just for that purpose)...he also told me that if he did re-issue the V77, he would have the new run manufactured by 797Audio (the original manufacturer) rather than MXL's current manufacturing facility (to keep the re-issued version as close to the original specs as possible)...
...I think it would be a purposeful gesture if all those interested in obtaining one of these great mics would email Scott at MXL and request the re-issue version (scott@mxlmics.com)...he may not know how many potential buyers he has for such a project... ;)

i got mine for $180--it's one of the first production run (more champagne color than silver). since i bought it, i've used it for at least one thing on every recording i've done--more often than not, more than one thing.

cheers,
wade
