Still no word from Todderick R. Ragsdale, a/k/a Mistarags, of Jacksonville, TX. Not easy to forget for those of us who were scammed. PayPal disputes have been opened, and information will be forwarded to state and federal authorities. It may not be a lot of money, but this is interstate wire fraud, a federal offense, and it threatens the integrity of all of our otherwise honest and peaceful on-line commerce.

How can they bust him though? Can they track him down? Even though, i did not get scammed by this fool, i hate scammers!

Isn't it fairly easy to get you money back through PayPal? I don't know because I have never had to, but I had a guy retract his payment when item didn't arrive in time, and they gladly took the money from me and gave it back to him.

Hope this all gets worked out soon.

Pete

How safe are money orders?

Postal MO's aren't too bad, as long as you send it to an actual address and not a PO box. That way you have the person's name and address, and it only takes one phone call to get the local PD at their front door. Oh, and if you get scammed when you send a money order: its mail fraud, a federal offense.

I think paypal is pretty good as far as getting your money back goes, but I don't use it. I would much rather know the seller's legal name and street address, rather than just wire my money to someone. Especially if all I really know is their screen name alias. It would be ok if I actually knew who they were and where they lived.

Well, i wanna buy a mic from some other guy and he lives in US, and i live in Canada. so would it be safe to do a MO?

What I'm concerned of is that, if i MO a person in US, how am i guaranteed to get my money back if the seller doesn't give the product or i receive it in a damaged state?

thats a good question.

It is still mail fraud if you use the post and the person deliberately decieves you. If you are sending a pesonal MO with your bank, there may be some way to cancel the money order. If he holds the item until your money order clears his bank, he has the cash and it is harder to get back.

Assuming you know his actual name and address, you could still call the cops on him. However, I think the best way to deal internationally is with paypal.

I'm really glad I didn't buy that Avalon vt737sp from him....he never got back to me on giving me a phone number and address. I knew the deal was just too good to be true...

Thanks for the advice bro. I'll stick with paypal then. thanks again.

I had a bad feeling about this when I first viewed this thread. Why no case? Just the mic and power supply...probably stolen that's why.

Wednesday and still no response...I am officially stepping up the claim with Paypal - I suppose they make you take several steps before they attempt to issue a refund. I will keep everyone posted on the outcome of this tomfoolery so you know what course of action to take if it ever happens to you.

wow! that's nuts. i hope you guys get your money back. i've been using ebay for years, and have always had good luck. now it's all catching up with me...i've had a slew of terrible buyers and sellers lately.

I am going to do the same. He might just be out of town or his computer might have died, but with two people telling him they are sending him money he should have found a way to get in touch.

just my 2 optomistic cents,
it has been the holiday. Maybe on a vacation?
like one poster said, maybe chill a bit, he's on the good guy list.
a week can go by fast....giving Mrags the benefit of the doubt.

and yes its easy to refund money on Paypal, no problem there, takes seconds.

reading this thread, its still a hassle when this stuff happens, no matter how it comes out...geez.

good luck, seems only two people paid him (at least on this forum! jus kidding).

Wouldn't you think a real crook would go for $2500 or something bigger than $200 MXL??
like a Vintage RCA.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$??

yeah, but come on. He sent pm's to three different members with his paypal address, telling them all they could buy the mic. That seems more than fishy enough to me to file a paypal claim.

At first I thought this was just an honest mistake, but when Jack A posted that he had got the message to pay too, I figured that it was a scam beyond a reasonable doubt.

I hope that I am wrong for your guys' sake.

Don't expect state law enforcement to take any action but local will if approached properly.

Last year I helped a friend in local law enforcement track down an eBay deadbeat. A guy in North Carolina had bought a piece of studio equipment from a local guy here but got stiffed. The idiot here was stupid enough to carry on an email conversation before the auction was over describing the band he was in and what instrument he played, etc. The buyer tried state and federal law enforcement but they said the amount of money lost ($1,200) was too low to bother with. He got in touch with the locals here and explained the situation. Told him sure, he plays in xxx band. Didn't know where he lived though. The seller had a PO Box but closed it as soon as he got payment. Of course the idiot listed his mother's address (where he lives) to get the PO Box. Anyhow it was a postal money order and was cashed at a local bank. Even had him on video cashing the money order. My friend called the idiot first thing Monday morning (his band was out of town for the weekend). Gave him until 4:00PM to bring the money to the office. Plus $100 for the buyers expenses (phone calls, etc)! The buyer had already filled out forms for an arrest warrant and faxed them. All that was needed was the Judge's signature. Well the idiot did the only smart thing he ever did in his life which was have the money there by 4:00PM.

1st moral of this true story. Just like the ads say, you can reach out and touch someone. You just have to find someone in local law enforcement willing to make a phone call. That's usually all it takes. Always try the local Sheriffs department first. They tend to be more responsive.

2nd moral of this true story. If you are a scumbag who likes to take advantage of good, trusting people then know you can be found. The last thing you want is a deputy knocking on your door and looking into your business. Definitely not worth 100+ bucks. I know this isn't much money (well to me it would be) but you'd be surprised the lengths people will go to on principle.

No update, yet on my situation. I am waiting out the PayPal dispute process. If I don't get my money back I am certainly thinking about notifying local authorities. I know where the seller lives, and he shouldn't be too hard for his hometown police to locate.

Still, there's the off chance that he just hasn't figured out how to resolve the multple-buyer situation (it's easy, Todd: PayPal will help you send back the money)....

Agreed...I would ultimately like the mic; however, if this is truly a mix up then flip a coin...send one of us the mic and the other the money.
Unfortunately, I don't believe this is a mix up. For this much time to go by with no communication at all is rediculous.
