Me and two other work colleagues have been asked to play for about a 1/2 hr. at a breakfast fundraiser this Wednesday where about 200 people will be attending. This is not a real serious gig by any stretch, but it will be my first performance for a crowd of that size. We'll be plugging into a Peavey Escort PA system and each of us has to provide our own vocal mics. My acoustic guitar will plug into the Peavey, and for vocals, I only have two mics available to me -- an old AT??? electret condenser (with a battery in it) and my MXL V67G that I recently bought for recording. Not the best choices for sure, but they're all I have at the moment. I was thinking of trying the V67G, but is this a bad choice for performance?

Thanks for any advice.

In my experience, LDC's (or ANY condenser mic, for that matter) are VERY hard to use in a live setting. They are so sensitive, that they are very prone to feedback, unless you are working at very, very low volume levels. Of course, you didn't say anything about monitoring, so if you are just singing into a mic that is set up behind the position of the speakers, then you should be OK, as far as feedback goes. (I'd still recommend that you just borrow a decent dynamic mic for the gig.) I don't know how you'll be able to hear what you're singing, however, if there is no monitoring available.

Another problem is that a Peavey Escort system probably won't have nearly enough power to cover a crowd of 200 people. It's more suited to small coffeehouse type gigs. You'll be able to play the show with it, but people in the back won't be able to hear much of what's going on.

Either way, lots of luck with your gig. :)

I'd go with the Audio Technica 813 (I'm willing to bet that's what it is). It's a good PA mic.

Keep in mind that the you will need phantom power for the MXL V67G.
Peavey Escort PA dosnt have phantom power.

Thanks all.

Brad, your point about condensers is well-taken.

Harvey, you're right that the AT mic is an 813. You sure know your shit! That's the one I'll go with.

Timbo, thanks for heads-up about the Peavey (that in itself makes the AT the one to go with).

I used the MXL V67M live on trumpet a few years ago and was very pleased with the sound. You definately need a graphic EQ to tame down feedback if you plan on turning the volume up at all.

Cheers,
Zach
