I'm just wondering what's the general consensus on these two mics for recording vocals. I know at least a couple of forum members have recommended the v67, and it's so cheap that I've been tempted to try one. I have experience with the AT3035 which I didn't like much, the Kel HM2D which I like better, and the mk219, which, if memory serves me well, was the best of all. I'm wondering how these two MXl mics compare...especially the v67g. Or should I pass on both and get something else? I really need to stay under $200 or so. If I had the bucks I would just get an Oktava 219 or 319 and have it modded. I'm looking for a mic for softer...country ballad type vocals. For rock I have the Kel or one of my dynamics.

I own a v67 and once auditioned a v69me. They sound similar although one is tube and the other is not. I actually prefer the v67 although both are good mics. The v67 is pretty good all around also. Does decent acoustic guitar and hand percussion. If I had known when I started, I don't know if I would have bought any other sub $300 mics. I think it's as good as anything up to that price point. It's much better than it should be for the money. For the record my othe condensers are c414b uls, ksm27, and ksm44. I still have been using the v67.

Interesting...thanks. Considering the mics you have to choose from, that's quite a recommendation! I wonder how it compares sonically with the AT3035 or the others I mentioned.

Its a very useful mic...Id prefer the SP B1 because of the construction but both are very versatile.

I have the MXL v67g, Studio Projects B1 and Oktava MK-319.

I really like all of them but my favorite is the Oktava!

Here's a MK219 for $180. Have it modded later:

Or Buy a V67 now and have it modded later.

Or try a Fat Head ribbon maybe:

Or buy one of the ribbon mics that Oktavamod.com offers mods for and have it modded later.

I have a russian MK319 Ill sell you for $100 plus shipping...Mine isnt getting much use arround here.

Anyone know of a mod tutorial for those of us who want to do the mods DIY with our own parts (as opposed to a mod kit)?

If you want to mod an Oktava mk219 you should try and get hold of the article Scott Dorsey wrote for Recording mag about that. I think it was june '05. If you call the mag. they can probably send you a copy. He claims that it's the mechanical mods that often make the most difference...even without doing any electrical component upgrades.

These are probably two of my favorite cheapo condensers. My mic collection has mics costing almost 20 times as much as the V67, but it still gets use on a pretty regular basis. It really improves going into a nice transformer balanced mic pre. Every once in a while the V69ME will beat out all my other mics on some vocalists (not often though)

The V67 is one of the mics I recommend in my beginners mic buying guide.

That's a great recommendation...thanks. I'll most likely be using either an Aphex 107 or a Rane ms1b preamp. I just picked up a cheap CAD m179 on ebay. It was so cheap I couldn't resist, seeing as it has gotten almost universally favorable reviews. I like it a bit better than the AT3035, but still, it doesn't give me goosebumps or anything. For the $60 bucks I paid though I think I'll get some use out of it...though if I eventually get something better I'll sell it. Has anyone tried both the CAD m177/179 and the v67 or v69 on vocals? I'm wondering how they would compare. The CAD sounds very neutral...in a good way.

I was thinking of another flavor for my mic cabinet and the Blue Bluebird and the SP CS5 are shooting it out for the open spaces my older mics will leave in my case.

I hadnt really considered the shure ksm32 a cannidate...but I did think of the ksm44...and as a medium sized capsule I was thinking an AT4033.

The V67 hasnt been in my cabinet yet...but I might think about adding a pair sometime...I did buy an original SP C1 and wrote off the V67...that C1 does get alot of use here.

They had a V67m that was black...and they used a better grade of wire.

Paj: is the 9090 identical electronically to the v67...and is one of the capsules identical?

darrin: that's the one with internal Mogami wire. Do you think it really makes a noticeable difference with a very short length of wire? I'm pretty doubtful myself...probably just advertising hype.

I really like both these mics, but I actually prefer the sound of the KSM32 over the KSM44. It also has the added bonus of being a lot less money.

Interesting...thanks. Would you recommend the KSM32 for a male baritone...for softer...ballad type of tunes? Any problems with sssssssss's on that mic? Some mics give me big sibilance issues.

You should get one of these...it is also good for acoustic guitar screach...I bought mine for 20 bucks on ebay.
