Hey everyone, my first post here. Had no idea this forum was around and I love it!

I've been doing a lot of demos or recording gear trying to get some true A/B comparisons.

Check out my demo of the MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone. I was very impressed with this microphone especially since its less than 100 bones. I recorded it on my guitar cabinet at 2", 6", and 12" centered on the cone using both the front and back of the microphone.

I also did a spectrum analysis of the audio samples so you can see the frequency response of each sample.

While it doesn't introduce a ton of ribbon flavor, it does do a good job capturing the tone of the cabinet.

Heres the link. Lemme know what you think.

Definitely sounds good man.

I've recently been using some Nady RSM-4's (another cheap ribbon mic) and finding out that ribbons are where it's at. Nothing better to get that up front "real" sound. I upgraded the transformers and they've really come to life.

You might try angling the ribbon mic down toward the center of the cone. (the mic would be 45 degrees to the center of the cone) This will keep the ribbon from taking the brunt of the SPL's coming from the speaker. Also, it'll yield excellent tones.

thanks for the tip. I will give that a shot and post some sound samples to compare.
