Thanks Mick. Good to know that I shouldnt be paying more than A$550 for a C1 (pity I paid 599 for both the C1s I have bought previously). Still seems a little high compared to US$200 but glad you are looking into the issue and await the results.

Mick,

It would be interesting to know who is offering these "online" prices.

And I know at least one dealer who from past conversations would probably dispute how good the margins are.

the lowest price on C1 I've found till now = $549...and I've been told by the salesman they can do it better!!

Well, with both Alan and Mick saying (more or less) they want Studio Projects prices in Aust to be competitive with the US market, there is hope --- I think they can do it. :)

"Aye lads, but it's fookin' ard to speak honest n open like, when you're 'tween a rock n an 'ard place" .........he mumbles as a diversion to the "melodic" punk rock currently being mixed.

:D

Can anyone answer Ausrock's question about where are these Aust online stores that offer good prices on Studio Projects Mics?

Alfalfa,

Well it's been 4 days since I asked the question and the silence has been deafening.

Roker's answer is likely to be as correct as anything else for the time being.

I have only recently had a salesperson make vague unspecific sounds in the low 500's for a C1. He then justified his comments by saying that he didn't have much room to move within the pricing margins. His final comment was that he could do a much better deal on a RODE mic as his margins were better.

If we see price drops on SP mics, then someone, somewhere in the chain has to take a substantial reduction in their profit margins, and frankly, I can't imagine any retailer accepting that scenario whilst still being expected to promote the product.

yeah, I found that deal at a store that hasn't got an "online store" that's why I didn't bother answering where it was, coz alfaalfa asked for online stores, which is fair enough :) ,....
the $549 price was at Billy Hydes in Melbourne....
I was quite surprised to see them even having SP mics in there, as they allways had only shure and Rode :D :D ....
But I reckon the mic (SP c-1) could be bought for around $460-$470...
I've got no cash at the mom., but I will get it off them ASA funds permit..:D

Mick Wordley said............"I certainly am aware of good prices on line, in Australia."

I simply asked where these online deals are.

Well, Mick showed me a new dealer sheet that should reduce the mics quite a bit. In fact, I checked it today and his retail is now $472.00 before GST.

That is less retail than the USA, of course I have no idea what the selling price is, but if it is much more than $399.00AU to the customer before GST, then I suspect there will still be some resistance, but lets see how it all pans out.

Yeah, that's what they're still doing, waiting to see how it all pans out Thank you for looking in to the matter Alan, I'm sure our friends down there appreciate it.

Alan,

Well including GST that is approx., $519 Aust., and while it is an encouraging sign, I wont hold my breath.

In the past, street price has usually been retail less 20% which would bring that price down to approx $415 Aust. incl GST. However, with the current trends being seen, of distributors reducing margins available to the retail outlets, in an effort to maintain their own profits whilst staying competitive, it is becoming more and more common to have retailers reducing the amount they can discount off retail. Hence street prices aren't what they used to be. This whole trend is having repercussions which should be of concern to any manufacturer or for that matter distributor, a lot of whom in Oz have their heads so far up their anal orifices it just don't matter.

It can be done so much better, but I guess this is about all we can expect considering our relative isolation and small market size.

DJL,

Thanks for caring my friend.

ausrock, thank you mate. I think we need to keep everyone on top of this or nothing will change. If there is no change, maybe we should post a BOYCOTT note on every music/recording board/forum we can find on the internet if we have to?

Nah...............ultimately this is a local problem and I doubt that kind of action would achieve much. Also, it's not normally my way of handling things.

As I said, I feel it's possible for "things" to be a lot different and ultimately better for the consumer, but it is dependant on peoples priorities.

man, i wish i had spotted this thread earlier :) before i found mick was on the forum i had a heap of respect for FEA, i and i still do... it seems that retailers (and possibly wholesalers) have taken a lot longer to catch up with the home-rec trend here in oz than the consumers... but they are catching up :)

i have to say i was pretty impressed with the pricing of the mxl mics over here, but i guess thats relative to the (stronger) aussie dollar at the time of the initial shipment.... its good to hear rode are getting of their arse and altering their pricing... i took them a while to realise they aren't the only fish in the sea

personally i'm gonna give it a couple of months and see what these price wars bring...

great thread ausrock... didn't realise there were so many aussies on this board!

Dr,

This thread has gone in directions I hadn't originally intended or anticipated, maybe it'd ben a good thing, maybe not.

<didn't realise there were so many aussies on this board!?

Mate there's more than people realise.

< i had a heap of respect for FEA, i and i still do... it seems that retailers (and possibly wholesalers) >

Respect...........mine is almost out the window and I doubt they have respect for us. And from my experiences the retailer/wholesaler thing is the other way around.

The MXL importers are just as guilty as anyone else with their pricing structures.

Well, I admire you for your reply to my boycott suggestion, I hope it all works out. Good luck. :)
