i got the mxl v67g recently Nic and Ive been experimenting on my acoustic (as well as dodgy vocals) and believe the hype, there doesnt seem to be much this thing cant do...Id find out if folks have used this on an electric because I bet its pretty outstanding on that too (my amp isnt worth micing)


I bought new for $89....thats around the same as a 990 isnt it?

Well I picked up an SM57 that I'm still enjoying.
It's just that everytime I go to musiciansfriend I always see the mxl990 near the top of the best selling mic list along with the sm57, sm58, and a CAD mic kit.

I figured since it was always selling so well I might as well see what the word on it was... I really doubted a 50$ condenser mic could really be all that great...

The mxl v67g doesn't look to bad (price wise), would you mind maybe throwing up a few sound clips?

btw I have a C3 behri condenser thats fine on guitar too...just a bit high endy for vocals...that wasnt much more than $60

btw I have a C3 behri condenser thats fine on guitar too...just a bit high endy for vocals...that wasnt much more than $60

I've actually heard some good things about the behringer C3 as well, but I'm still a bit weary of a 50 dollar behringer condensor

OK, Here are my definative results. I have had an MXL990 for a couple of years now. Use it for vocals and really like it. But it has always bothered me singing through a cheap $50 Chinese condenser mic. I figured I better save up and get me a really good mic.

So, for a test, I go to my local music store that has a huge rental department and rent a AT4060 that they sell for about $1500. Don't know much about that mic, but for $1500, I figure it should sound better than my $50 MXL990.

So, I do a shootout in my humble basement studio. So here's the thing. I don't have great acoustic treament, or preamps etc. But, I put the 2 mics side by side on a stand, into the same preamp. Everything is identical except the mic's.

So what do I find. The $1500 AT4060 is a little nicer. 20x better, no. I mean the difference is audible, but so subtle I would never notice it in a mix.

So is the MXL990 that good ? Did I get a special one? I don't know, but I've done the test and made myself happy.

Interesting... I have no really good mics (ie more exp. than $125 or so) so I've never been able to experience that. That's hard to believe, maybe poor room treatment or sub-outstanding preamps are the weak link that's masking the real differences between the mics? I wonder if you would get the same results in a high-end pro studio with the best pre's, rooms designed specifically for acoustics, etc.

I was very surprised. I had drunk the coolaid that the microphone was everything. As you said, better pre, better room and you might hear a huge difference. But I have what I have.

Also, I used each mic in exactly the same way, same equipment and same room, so the only difference was the mic.

The other thing is that I am pleased with my vocal recordings. I think they are fine as is, but thought maybe a better mic would make then magical or something.

Like I said, I can record in peace now.
