I'm doing hip hop vocals and I just got the MXL 990 but i havent used it does any one know if it sounds good?What is a good pre amp to go with it?

Well, since you already got it...but in general the 990 is not the most respected mic around here, either in general or within MXL's line.
As to what pre to use with it, the big question there is for what price. I am guessing tha since you did not spend much on the microphone (or at least I hope you did not spend a lot) then your budget for the pre is also limited.
