i have a behringer xenyx 502 mixer
a rca to regular headphone looking jack
a mxl 990
and a xlr power cord hooked into the mic.
and the other xlr end hooked in the xlr slot thingy in the mixer.
and my microphone wont work.
i stuck the headphone looking jack into the mic port in my computer.

I am sorry to inform you that the Behringer Xenyx 502 mixer cannot make that microphone work. You see, the MXL 990 is a condenser mic which means it requires 48 volts (being sent to the mic) in order to function. This is known as Phantom Power. Most mixers have that feature built it, however, the 502 does not. I guess that is how they kept the price so low.

But fear not! You could always add a little box that will supply the power, then condenser mics will indeed work with that mixer. Otherwise you may need to stick to Dynamic mics (like the sm57) which do not require Phantom.

Here is an example of what you would need. You can insert it inline between the mixer and mic. (Extra cable needed.)

Sorry, man, but them's the facts.

Oh, I can recall when I was a rookie...I may have been even more confused and frustrated than you.

Hang in there. Things will come together for you soon enough.
