A lot of the GAS you hear about from beginners is often just people wishing/hoping that some new piece of gear will compensate for their (our) lack of experience with recording technique. At this price point, order either mic, and get recording. Good luck!

Man that's well said.

Great Post! Thank you! Now I can get the 990 or the SP B1 at the same price. Given that I cannot try either at these stores, which would you recommend I lunge at for vocals and acoustic guitar?

I'd get the B1. I own two. They represent 100% of my mic closet. People (both successful pros, and thoughtful amateurs) think my recordings of them are really good. (Don't you dare tell them otherwise!)

If you can't get a really good recording of anything, using a Studio Projects B1, it's you, not the mic. Is it the best thing out there? Not by a long shot. But, if you use it well, NO ONE is going to hear what you've done and say, "Gee, that's a great performance by a wonderful vocalist/guitarist, but the mic really let you down!" (OK, maybe if you do 24 tracks of B1's), but it's a very quiet, and, dare I say it, relatively neutral mic.

id get a mxlv67g....i use mine alot for vocals and acoustic.....same price as the sp b1......

I agree with Gidge... I'd take the MXLV67G over both the 990 and B1 too... but, if I could only choose between the B1 and 990... I'd take the B1.
