That would be the Electrovoice.

But then I suppose that's the subject of a whole nother thread.

Similar... yes. Just like or the same... no.

They sound pretty damn similar, DJL. :D
I wouldn't be surprised if they look similar to some people too. :D

I don't think I will be using them on an amp. Like I said they will be used mostly on vocals drum overheads and a martin acoustic guitar.

I just got my pair of 603s mics in yesterday, a friend called wanting to lay down some tracks and it turned out to be a good test for the mics.

As overheads, the high-end is very "sharp". You know, like most cheap mics.
Distorted guitar amp sounded good from far away, I didn't do any close micing though.

Really sounded nice on acoustic and did a pretty decent job on vocals.

The esses are somewhat harsh when listening closely, but keep in mind that I don't have a pop filter - just the windscreens that came with the mics.

I've put a sample of one of the acoustic songs we recorded on my soundclick page:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/2/sloanstewartmusic.htm

It's at the very bottom.

There's no effects, eq or anything - just the two mics plugged straight into my Yamaha AW16G. I thought it turned out quite good.

maybe the 990 and 603 had the same capsule.
In fact they sound complete different. While the 990 produces more bass and more treble, the 603s had clear and well defined midrange with a lot of presence. So it sounds good for acoustic guitars. The 990 sound chinese typical cheap. Also the 991 (it looks exact like the 603s) sound cheap and is not comparable to the 603s.

If you like a warmer but less presence sound, try Oktava MK-012. The Oktavas remembers me to Neuman KM84. They sound clear, transparent and very silky and sooo sweet. They are specially made for love songs.

What mic is specially made for protest songs?

It is so hard to decide which to get. Some say they sound very similar, some say they sound very different. I don't think I will really be able to test them out at all so it is really hard to make a decision. What to do!?!

Man, I are we all talking about the same mics, here? :D

Maybe it's the infamous Chinese QC, but mine don't sound that different. The housing just doesn't have that drastic of an effect on the sound in this particular case. Pretty subtle.

And the 991 is the same thing as the 603 - just a different number. Maybe they cut corners on these things by just cutting out the QC altogher? I hear a lot of different accounts on these things.

ahhhh who to believe? I want believe chessrock because the 990's are cheaper, but it is so hard to decide. Will I really be able to hear much of a difference if I am running them through (probably) a yahmaha mixer into an mr8 or straigt into a fostex vf160ex without the mixer?

If you get a 603 you probably pay $100 if you get the combo from MF/GC of the 990 & 991, you are paying $100 but you get both the 991 which is the 603s and the 990. If you go to the GC grand opening where someone said they have the combo for $50, you get the 990 and the 991/603s for $50. So get the combo, get both, use the 991/603s for most things, like ac/guitar and try the clugey 990 for experients. It looks like a LDc, but I keep forgetting that it's an SDC in a bigger can.

Really? 990 and 991 for 50 bucks. Who said that. I just went through all of the posts and nobody said that. Is this at every guitar center? I know the one here is having a sale, but I didn't hear about that. That is cheaper that musicians friend has for one 990. If they are 50 bucks I could get two sets and have 2 990's and 2 991's. Can anybody find out if this deal is true. I went on guitar center's website, but I couldn't find anything about that.

Look at what the majority said here.

If you can't decide who to believe and you can't audition the mics yourself... either flip a coin or just get the cheaper ones... either way, your always going to wonder if you made the best choice or not until you audtion both for yourself.

And I still recommed the MXL603S over the MXL990.

I just found out that I should have some gxl 1200 mics that I can use. I heard that these are very similar to the 603's. Does anybody know if this is true?
