MXL 603 & MXL 2001 packs

Hey there all.

Just wondering here, im looking for some overheads for drums. I was pretty convinced i was going to go with the JM27s just because ive heart great things and the price is top. Then i found these packs

I could pick up 2 of those packs for $260AU and i'd have 2 extra MXL2001s.

Sounds good seeing as a pair of 603s are $499AU.

So if i get 2 of those other packs, i save $240 and get 2 extra mics? Is there something wrong with the other packs? Also, how do the 2001s? how are those?

Yes getting the 603's in packs can be a better deal, the mics that come with them well, you might find a use for them.
 
They aren't a matched pair though, if that's what you're after. That's why the pair of 603s' are so expensive
 
i have never, ever heard anything good (or even remotely good) about the 2001.
personally, i think they bundle them with the 603 just to get rid of them.

Hi,

I bought them. I like the 603 on acoustic guitar. Good body. It is definitely what makes the pack a bargain.

I have sung through the 2001. It works with my lower male vocal voice. Sounds a lot like my EV PL80 on my voice.

cool thanks. just another question. How much difference is there in getting two mics of the same model and getting a matched stereo pair. Do individual mics differ that much that it affects it?
 
It can effect stereo recordings, duh, right? But to what effect, depends on what you are recording and what style of stereo recording you are using. If you were using two mics on a choir I would very much like a matched set. If your are recording acoustic guitar, well there I don't feel its that important, others may disargee with that. But if a matched set is only a little more get the matched set, if its twice as much gee buy four of them and match up two of the best of the four, and sell the other two on ebay or keep them as sometimes extra SDC's can come in handy. IMHO, YMWV, etc.
 
mxl, while cheap is not a bad company.
i can't imagine the difference between two unmatched 603's being all that big a deal.
 
i have two 603's (not matched) they're close, but then again i'm no expert. i know a guy or two who might think otherwise. So it depends on what your going for.

Here's a thought. I did a little work at a studio where the engineer used LDCs for overheads. Had a nice sound.
 
I haven't used any MXL mics, but I just ran across this blurb in the latest issue (#54) of Tape OP--one of my favorite mags, along with SOS, for fairly balanced reviews:

I read that in the last tapeop. i have a 2001 and i think that guy must be def. :D maybe he meant the v93m / 2003. i have a Nova that is supposed to have the same capsule as the 2003. the Nova seems some what accurate.
 
the 2001 sounds dead. i'm not a fan. Sometimes i wonder if these guys are getting paid off to say good things about mics. Or if they are just picking cheap gear and saying its good so they can capture the reader population of home studios.
 
603 is great for acoustics and overheads, and is (usually) damn cheap. I got mine (not matched) for < $150 US over a year ago. Nice bright sound, especially nice for acoustics in my limited cabinet.

Careful with these in an unflattering room though, they are near-omni and pick up computer noise and everything else from very far away, as well as the source.

Well, here is part of a review on the entire MXL mic line that I wrote in January of 2001:

"Marshall MXL-2001 - Harsh top end, thin bottom, compared to the TLM-103. It was a little warmer than the Nady SCM-1000, but the Nady had a smoother top end. The 2001 is everything that I don't like about all the really inexpensive large diaphragm condensor mics that I've listened to over the years, including the AKG C3000, the Oktava 219, and some of the early AT low cost units."

Not exactly the most flattering review you'll find.
 
i'm sure it wasn't personal, all of us here know better than that harvey.

Harvey, do you have reviews of MXL 990? for vocals which one is better MXL 2001 or 990?

I think you're right, I've got a 2003, I wouldn't use it for electric guitar or male vocals (the two other stops I tried it on its tour of duty), but as a drum overhead it's pretty righteous. Everything is crisp and clear, and you can't beat the price (there's definitely better out there but as far as MXLs go...) As for the package deal, I would go for the 603/2001 deal before the 990/991 deal, or get them both and compare. $200 for four microphones isn't the worst deal in the world, and if you hate them, there's someone else looking to buy them. Actually with all four you may get some really neat combinations.
 
I have some 990s and some 604s, and my only beef with them is that they get pretty noisy at what seems to be an unnacceptably low gain setting. I can't get much from them for recording close-mic'd acoustic guitar work because they just get too damn noisy. I love the 604s as 1-foot distance mics for electric guitar cabs (with the high-pass filter on, they add a nice top-end to my clean jazz tone), and the 990s work well for vocals since you don't have to crank the gain too much, but yea - if you are looking for good overheads, I'd say look for a matched pair of something other than MXLs... I have never used the more expensive ones, perhaps they are better at high gain levels, but that's just my experience thus far.
