MXL 603 & Joemeek JM27 are they the same?

"MXL 603 & Joemeek JM27 are they the same?"

Good question... and I hope Alan see's your question and answer's it with an easy to understand yes or no answer. I don't think they are, but maybe the Studio Projects C4 and Behringer B5 could be as much the same as the JM27 and MXL603S are the same.

PS... hey deepwater, don't buy any mics from that link you posted...

Well what I meant by the same, is that they, the MXL603, ADK SC1, and Joemeek JM27, as well as some Cascade and SE mics are all about the same price for a SD mic, all the same kind of shape. There are a couple of differences between the 603 and the JM27. For example, the Joemeek JM27 is a transformer output, the 603 is not!

There will also be a matched pair set of JM27's coming with shock mount s and a stereo bar, so that is cool as well. So answering DJL's questions, they are kind of the same in many way, yet they are different.

I refrain from commenting on which sounds better as that would be a conflict, but I am sure those of you who end up with the JM27, will let us know. We think they are pretty darn good for the money...Time will be the judge...

Brent, if you be hangin around, you can eloborate on the differences.....

Well, the capsules are quite similar, the circuits are not. Both use the 2SK170BL JFET, but in entirely different manners. The 603 splits the signal at the JFET into two smaller out of phase but equal signals which drive a couple of PNP emitter follower transistors on the output.
The JM27 uses the 2SK170 configured as a common source amplifier which is capacitively coupled to a step down transformer on the output. The capsule is phantom polarized at around +46v.
The board layout is quite nice. A well-manicured playground for any of you DIY'ers out there.

With that said... come on Alan and Brent... you both have the right to post your opinion on which mic (JM27 vs MXL603S) you like best... just because you own or work for "PMI Audio Group" doesn't mean that your not entitled to an opinion just like anyone else on this bbs.

I believe Brent probably owns some MXL 603's, left over from his days at Marshall, and I'm also pretty certain he would use those, the JM27, or his C4's in any situation where he felt the mics would would be appropriate.

Sometimes, you just grab a mic because it's handy. :D

No. You have to define what the same is. Is it the same type of mic...yes! Is it about the same price...yes! Are they used for the same applications...yes!

The C4 and B5 are the same kind of mic as well, just not the same price.
 
Man, now I feel bad for posting my original response. :\ Guess I better be careful when I read things like "same mic inside" from one of the employees...

What would be the difference in sound between a transformer output and a non-transformer?
