Hi,

I've read that the MXL 770 uses the same capsule as the 603. Is it really the same mic?

My guess is it wouldn't be too easy to put an omni cap in a 770. But what do I know?

I just got my 770 from the toonster and I've been messing about with it.

Not the same mic. It appears they may use the same cap, and both are FTE design. But the 770 is side address with a different casing (and potentially different board and electronics). The polar patterns are different (the 603s is definitely a wide cardiod), and freq responses appear to be different (the 770 has 10dB spike at 9-10k).

MXL sells a matched pair of omni caps that will fit the 603's.

The pair, in a nice metal case, are under 50 bucks. They're available at Front End Audio and at Guitar Center (although most GC's probably won't know what you're talking about).

It's called the "603/604 Omni Pair".

i bought the 603 pair on ebay a week ago and had the same concerns. i emailed mxl, and here are our emails to each other:

Hi, I'm wondering if there is any difference between the 603s Mogami Edition stereo matched pair and a stereo matched pair of 603 mics. There is a seller on Ebay that claims these 2 items are identical, that both mics contain the Mogami wiring. Is this true? This seller claims to be an authorized Marshall dealer and is selling the 603 stereo pair for $109.95, but the cheapest 603s pair I've found is $170. Can you help to clear this up? Thanks!

Hello, first allow me to say thank you for having found interest in our MXL microphones. As for your question, The seller is correct. There is no difference between the 603 and 603s. The 603 omni capsules are a bargain and since picking them up, I don't use the directionals anymore. Search Ebay. Here are a few sources;
