Multitracker setup

Hello,

I'm wondering if what I plan on doing is going to work. I just need some assurance. I have a Boss BR-600 multitracker, various effects pedals for my guitars (which is irrelevent really) and i'm planning on buying an AKG Perception 120 to mic vocals and some raw drums (feel free to advise against that decision) and a phantom power unit. So it would go mic, xlr cable, phantom power unit, xlr cable, multitracker. Is that going to work?

Thanks for all and any help in advance,
Will

I would suggest buying a better multitracker. Look into fostex and tascam recorders. Even the cheap ones around $300 have phantom power built in and probably a couple more channles. I don't know what your budget is but if you're wanting to record drums I'd definately get something bigger.

The AKG mic's should be fine. I have 2 of them and they sound pretty good for the price, They have a pretty flat response so what ever you record, if your mic is in the right place it will reproduce it accurately.

I already have the BR-600 though, so taking into account the fact it doesn't have phantom power, will my hypothetical setup do the job?

Sure it will and the right phantom power unit will probably help with the quality of signal as well as supplying power to your mics.
I have a couple. One is a cheap Nady that does nothing but add noise and the other is an Art Dual phantom power supply which, although inexpensive, is actually very good. I'll find a link for that.
My first studio mic was the AKG Perception 100. Lovely mic. A bit high in the mid range but all budget mics are going to have some kind of flavour.
They are extremely well built. Austrian or German parts, assembled in China.
I expect that you may choose to transfer the tracks to a computer based system for editing but it can all be done in the Boss unit if you want to.

I got this one http://www.amazon.com/ART-Phantom-Dual-Power-Supply/dp/B0002E57QG and it's fine but you may choose to go the distance and actually get yourself a 2 channel preamp (with phantom power) which you will still have a use for after you upgrade.

Thanks a lot. Very helpful post. I was actually already eyeing up that phantom power unit on eBay. It's a buy it now auction for £22 ($33) inc. postage. Will snap that up now. Cheers.

Sure, just keep in mind though that you are working with a budget unit.
Limit yourself to how much you are willing to spend on it before upgrading becomes a more sensible option.
