Multichannel recording on a budget

Hi,

I'm new to recording multichannel...
I don't come from music, my sound experience is in film sound design and although we create multi-channel mixes, usually I record almost everything in mono (sometimes stereo), and I'm working with Protools TDM & HD with multiple channel inputs.
A good friend is wanting to record his songs (drum kit, guitar and vocals primarily) on his home computer and asked me about it; I immediately responded that a close multi-miking technique would be best for the drums and that he should record everything in separate tracks and mix/signal process later.
Sometime later I thought, well, his G5 doesn't have multiple inputs and they aren't XLRs anyway so I asked him how it was going... turns out he is going though some kind of PA system (I guess its like a mixer) where he is inputing all the mikes and then just pluging that into the mini plug in the computer... he asked me about a lag he was getting in the recording, but I wasn't sure why he was getting that.
Anyway I still think he should try to record the elements separately, but he doesnt have the money for a Digi 002 (he would like to spend around $500), so I was wondering if maybe there is some other way to recosrd multi-channel that I can't think of or if anyone knows of some cheaper systems.

I apologize if this question has been posted before, I looked in the archives for a while but wasn't sure I had found the right answer.

Thank you very much for any responses.

Regards,

-felipe.

Behringer always has some affordable equipment (sometimes questionable at the same time)...they make the ADA8000 which some people here are testing their opinions on right now as we speak. If you want to spend a little more money you can find some MOTU or Alesis gear too. I think the 828MKII is around $750...but those aren't XLR inputs.

P.S. http://protoolsle.proboards32.com/index.cgi if you're interested in getting/giving Pro Tools help

I assume he is using a mixer sence he has a PA.

I would suggest getting a Delta 44 ($150) It has 4 ins and 4 outs. 1/4" though so he will need to use his mixer for the preamps and just input the signal into the delta.

as far as the lag, thats we like to call Mr. latency. Prob. would like to know what soft he is using to record.

Thanks for the info. I'll be looking that stuff up.

Best,

-felipe.
