Hi,
I'm new to recording multichannel...
I don't come from music, my sound experience is in film sound design and although we create multi-channel mixes, usually I record almost everything in mono (sometimes stereo), and I'm working with Protools TDM & HD with multiple channel inputs.
A good friend is wanting to record his songs (drum kit, guitar and vocals primarily) on his home computer and asked me about it; I immediately responded that a close multi-miking technique would be best for the drums and that he should record everything in separate tracks and mix/signal process later.
Sometime later I thought, well, his G5 doesn't have multiple inputs and they aren't XLRs anyway so I asked him how it was going... turns out he is going though some kind of PA system (I guess its like a mixer) where he is inputing all the mikes and then just pluging that into the mini plug in the computer... he asked me about a lag he was getting in the recording, but I wasn't sure why he was getting that.
Anyway I still think he should try to record the elements separately, but he doesnt have the money for a Digi 002 (he would like to spend around $500), so I was wondering if maybe there is some other way to recosrd multi-channel that I can't think of or if anyone knows of some cheaper systems.
I apologize if this question has been posted before, I looked in the archives for a while but wasn't sure I had found the right answer.
Thank you very much for any responses.
Regards,
-felipe.
