So I'm curious - what's the best YOU have experience with. I'm looking at getting one to add to my current LDC's - an NTK, a 4040 and a C1.

I've used the B3 and the M179. I liked the M179 better.

Any list like this should include some ADK mics, such as the TL and TC, both at or under budget. I'd also add the CAD VSM1, a very nice tube mic (carioid only).

Sorry, I'm not familier with the ADK line, though the ST looks like it would fit this poll. Just remember that none of the mics you mentioned actually fit under the budget and are Multi-pattern. They're likely great, but they are totally different mic than what we're looking for...

A used Soundelux U97, they should be in your price range. Soundelux stopped making them, but I got one of the last ones. I use mine on vocals and acoustic guitar (the Omni pattern is really good for this)

The street prices of either the ADK TL or TC are below $600, as is the CAD VSM1.

Yes but are they multi-pattern? It didn't seem like they were. If they were than they'd fit the bill. We're talking about multi-pattern mics here...

The TC is only one pattern but the TL is Cardioid, Hyper-Cardioid, Omni-directional, & Figure of 8.

Buy the T3 and I'll give ya $200 and my C3! Or if ya want, I'll send you my C3 to try out to see if you like it, I really haven't used it since I got my Brauner and my Neumanns ( You pay shipping of course)

Hahaha...I'm not sure what mic I want yet. I'll likely just buy one mic, not spend 550 on a mic just to trade it away for a $350 mic

Save a few extra bucks and get a Shure KSM44. The CAD M179 is good, as is the Studio Projects C3 and T3. Then there's the Rode K2. Plus take a look at the Studio Electronics SE-Z3300A.

Cheers,
Zach

If you decide youa re interested in an AT4050 (which I voted for, but a KSM 44 would be right there with it) I am selling mine for $400 shipped.

I was torn between SP T3 and AT4050 ... went with the T3 in the end because it is a bit cheaper and a bit nicer on a lot of vocalists. But with a pair of AT4050s and a T3 I reckon I'd be a kick mic short of an entire set in case of emergency! :)

I used an SE Electronics Z5600A the other day, it was extremely good and beat out the U87 we had it up against on a bunch of different singers we tested it against ... I'd be interested in borrowing the SE to try against my T3 sometime.

AT-4050 or KSM-44. Both are great mics that IMHO sound pretty much the same (AT-4050 maybe a bit darker but YMMV). Shure has a better shock mount and typically comes with a nice flight case. The AT is a bit cheaper. Pick your poison. Either would do you very well and are commonly available used. I have a pair of the AT-4050s.

The other modern LD condensor I have that I like a lot is the Beyer MC-834. Very realistic rather than flattering. Cardioid only, but with multiple pads and rolloffs. Can be a bargain on E-Bay. I paid less than $550 for a pair of these.

After these we start getting into more obscure but interesting LD mics like the Gefell M582h and the Groove Tubes MD series (MD1, MD2, MD3 and the "a" reissues). Very nice mics but less multi-purpose.

So it's looking like people favor the 4050 and the T3 from the list - and some the M179 but it's a different class than the other two.

Other options include the SE option, and the KSM44...

I got some thinking to do...I think I'm going to give up my C1 for this...So I might like the T3 (slightly cheaper) over the 4050. That way I keep an SP, an AT and my Rode - good brand variety.

But the KSM44 could be a good brand addition as well.

Maybe I'll start a new thread to talk about these options...
