So it's looking like people favor the 4050 and the T3 from the list - and some the M179 but it's a different class than the other two.

Other options include the SE option, and the KSM44...
This is it! :) Bear in mind that not many have heard ALL the mics in question, and those who have will not have the same opinions as each other! But you can be sure of a good buy with any of these mics on this shortlist.

Prolly comes down to which one is better looking. THE MICS, I MEAN!

You want to sing into mr. microphone...? :D

Oh this mike may be a little more expesive then the shure ksm44 but I think it's worth it. The AKG C414... I think new they run about 800.

For cheap how about a modified Apex 460? 300 bucks on ebay. :D

The CAD M179 would be a safe bet for a neutral, unhyped sound. Regardless of price it's a true performer.

The SE Z3300A would be a safe bet for a more open and exciting sound, giving more cut while remaining smooth.

I see an AKG C414B-ULS new in box on ebay for $639.99. I would prefer that option to virtually any multipattern in that pricerange, with the possible exception of Shure KSM44. The 414 absolutely will not disappoint as a studio tool.-Richie

In that price range the KSM44 is the only way to go. But if you can get a 414 for that price, I'd do that first.

I agree about the 414, but do a bit of research, there've been some model changes and whatnot. a used one would be well within your range.

Thanks for these other suggestions, but it really is a question of under 6 new, as my budget is really 400. Neither the KSM44 or 414 are easy to find at under 4 used...
