Alright mate, what's up? There was an article in either Guitarist or Guitar Buyer that featured a tour of the Gibson factory and it was suggested that in the next ten years Mahogany would be considered endangered like Brazillian Rosewood is now (though perhaps not to the same degree). Your thoughts?

I don't read either these days mainly because they are full of adds and rubbish articles.

On the Mahogany thing, which species of Mahogany are they talking about? Some are in scarcer supply than Braz Rosewood, others are only just being tried and in plentiful supply. Many of the Mahoganies out there aren't true Mahoganies in any case. I'm not about to worry any time soon but I don't buy as much timber as Gibson.

Beware of Gibsons marketing speak it is among the most self serving in the industry. Don't forget only a year ago they had reinvented the guitar and we would all be playing self tuning guitars in the coming days.;)

Hows you bro by the way? Haven't seen him round much lately either.

Yes, I'm particularly dubious of Gibson - took the tour of the hollow-body factory in Memphis and was a bit disappointed when the guide couldn't answer a question about P90s. I'll find the exact article, 32-20 Blues buys the magazines and I read them when he's done.

He's good by the by, driving me mental with his unconventional recording styles. He's big on Bill Frisell these days and something called a 'prepared guitar'...I don't know much about it, he'll probably be here to talk about it soon.

Not quite 50 yet but getting closer and closer.:eek:

Prepared guitar is basically sticking stuff on the guitar to get it to sound different. Also called table top style or hands over. A lot of experimental stuff being done all the time on that one. Essentially covers everything from slide to sympathetic strings and everything else in between..but I'm sure he's told you all about that. Don't let him near your guitars though.;)

Honduran Mahogany (the stuff Gibson has always used on Les Pauls and the like) is already on the CITES list. It is not all that restricted yet, but it will get there. That includes basically all the stuff they call "South American" mahogany (actual Mahogany from Honduras hasn't been readily available for years, but the same species from other countries has been used interchangeably). The cost has been going up by leaps and bounds in recent years. Dad figures he has enough for necks for the rest of his life, but I'm going to have to start using alternatives.
