OK... we're rolling.

As promised, here is my first effort. It's rough and pretty simple, but I just wanted to go through the motions and figure out the whole process. I got through all the hissing and volume issues thanks to you folks. Your input was greatly appreciated, as is all input here. So here it is.

I see you got rid of the hiss! Good job Andy. Lyrically, it's a good tune. How did you record it? Was it all live or seperate tracking? The tone on the guitar is excellent, sounds like you got that down pretty good. There may be some timing issues in there that you can correct with the click track. Hope you do better with it than I do...I can't "hear" a click track like I do drums. I would be interested to know how you recorded the guitar (mic placement, etc.). Overall this is a really good first effort, keep em coming!

Thanks for listening and for your comments. Like I said, it was a pretty rough recording. I recorded the guitar first by simply plugging my acoustic/electric into the MR-8 input "A" 1/4 jack w/ a monster cable. That was track 2. Then I recorded the vocals through a Shure SM86 into a Presonus TubePre preamp and out into the Input "A" mic-type connection on track 1. (I am still trying to figure this combo out as I think it could sound a lot better.) I then did some light equalizing and normalizing on Cakewalk. Yeah, the timing could definitely be greatly improved. I'll probably re-record the vocals in the near future.

I had a bit of hiss and distortion going on in my mr8 while recording directly out of the PA head output and found that by running an extension cord to another outlet in the house that ran on a different branch I eliminated the hiss. That was in the manual so I figured it was worth a try. Worked.
When going direct into the unit with guitar and a EVcardoid mike the sound is crystal.

I appreciate all the dialogue on this forum. I'ts really a big help to those of us just trying to get things up and going. THANKS

The power line thing is common with the MR-8. (Some of us found that running a vaccum cleaner probably isn't the best thing to do while recording...)

Also TV's and computer monitors - moving my Takamine an inch or two makes a huge difference while recording near a PC.

So let me get this straight...

So let me get this straight...,

ONLY the master slider affects bouncing levels?
The individual track faders do not affect the overall volume/final outcome of the 7/8 bounce (or for that matter the 1-4/5,6 bounce???

I have tried recording electric guitar both miked and straight in from my mixer, and have as of yet not found a satisfactory sound. There seems to be a bit of lowend distortion present in more than a few of my N-track wavs. My equipment is getting pretty old, and I have therefore been chasing my tail trying to nail it down. Does anyone have any tips for recording heavilly distorted guitar?

Should I run my trims as close to peak as possible, or should I ease back that extra hair after peaking has ceased???

SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!

cellardwellar this probably need to be answered by him, but in case he is on vacation or something, I seem to remember buck say that he always tried for the mid point when recording guitar. I think it is about twelve on the meter on the MR-8.
