MR-8 Users and Examples/Samples

Some users might think the lack of routing and eq is a problem, but it's so cool to be able to move WAVs to a PC without the hassle of other products, and use some of the great tools available there.

Has anyone used Audacity? It's an "open source" (free) audio edittor that the creators want to expand into a full fledged multitrack application.

It's interesting that the guitar effects on the MR-8 are so bad, but I hit the mastering buttons last night and could not believe how great they made the whole mix sound!

Can't wait to post some examples of what we are working on!

I was telling a friend of mine that in regards to eq'ing, I'm learning more about mic placement and acoustics with this machine than I ever did with the Tascam 244, (which had a great parametric eq) and as far as effects send and return, heck, if I want to use one, I just plug into it and then into the MR8, but, I find I'm worrying less about cool "sounds" and more about what I'm playing, sooooo, my playing has already improved greatly. I just hope that they aren't really "flawed" as I am getting very attached to it. The MR8 has been exactly what i needed, in a very affordable package.

Great point - one of my singers commented last night how this really makes her think about phrasing, etc. So many of these units pack in features that perpetuate the notion that "I can fix it in the mix." The MR-8 really "tells it like it is!"

it is easy to use. and with such nice sound quality, i want to use it and i'm coming up with more tracks/ideas than before.

What's the deal with all the numbers for the tracks?

I have mr80001.wav, 1.8 megs
mr8002 same
mr8002 up to 3 meg
mr8004 same
mr8005 is 12 mb
same up to mr80008
9 and 10 are only 1.6 mb
11 and 12 are 12.8 mb
then i have s7.ad. and s7.bak
(s7 is my song name)

i recorded tks 1&2 then 3&4 then mixed them to 5&6
so why do i have 12 tracks waves?

too tired to play them all on pc now, i'll throw this out there and look deeper tmw when eyes work again....

I'm sure some of them are "undo" tracks. If you go to 'song' menu and do a 'delete unused' I believe the extra tracks will be gone.

The WAV file for my 3:45 minute song is over 28 Mbytes. If you have a chance, listen to it and see what you think.

Ok, my next planned step last night, before i ran out of energy and my eyes closed half way like window shades with lead weights and a short man with one arm trying to hold them up with the arm and a prosthetic made in Taiwan one size fits all, was to try the "menu" item "delete unused."

I actually didn't do any deletes, alls i did was to re-record on the same track! So what that does, is to just create a new file for that track and the old one, does not get deleted! It just sits there like the ugly girl at the party, totally ignored, taking up space, barely noticed, untill you hook it up to the computer and find it within (metaphor ended btw) the file structure with file manager or whatever windows now calls it.

so if i re-start recording, i could also run out of space if i do it enough and i won't even have one track completed yet!!!

I wonder if i start to run out of space that way would the thing have any brains and start deleting unused files on it's own like windows asks you if you want to empty the recycle bin when you fun out of hard drive space.... I somehow doubt it.

Ya know, my old sony mdmx 4tk mkii - if your first track was 2 minutes, you couldn't multitrack the next one for any longer. and if you went to re-record over it, it stopped at 2 minutes. if you went to 2 minutes 10seconds, your 10 seconds wasn't accepted. what pos. so you had to actually delete the song file and start new. rediculous. (esl) Anyway, just a rant.

remember - delete unused. And, there's not "button" for that one on the deck.

Ah, the ever popular "delete unused". As I ranted about before ever buying an Mr-8 - card space is going to be a bitch. Again, buy a Tascam, or Korg, and then listen to your Fostex - the sound quality is worth the trouble! As one one wise jerk said - "these cards will get cheaper..." If a 512MB card is 169 bucks, this thing is still a screaming bargain versus recording into Cakewalk...blech!

Now if they were really smart, they would have left us a couple or three programmable buttons for us. We could have assigned them to frequently used functions so we wouldn't have to go into the menus. Like I start and stop and restart a lot so i could assign 'delete unused.' or someone may be going to usb a lot or here's one, I would love to be able to shut the click on and off without going menu. I almost never use the counter reset button....

I just came back from having a great time at a little hole in the wall bar where friends were playing. :) :) :) :) On a normal day, I wake up in 1 1/2 hours. - Support local music.

I did this tune to learn how to use my MR-8. I was anxious to get it together so the playing is real sloppy, so don't trash me too badly.

This involved a total of 10 different track takes, so several of them had to be mixed down a couple of times. The song is an old Yardbirds song, except mine is "For Your Love (the twisted mix)."

No stream, I had to download to hear it. What happened to the vocals? I couldn't hear any past the fisrt few seconds. I listened on junky equiptment, but I heard no noise.

How do you get 10 tracks from the thing?

Going out today for powered monitors for the line outputs on the unit. Some comments on my tracks were hiss, so i need to get monitors before i get any other stuff.

Cannot copy mr80003: The parameter is incorrect.

Did anyone ever get this error message while trying to copy from the MR-8?

Cannot copy mr80003: The parameter is incorrect.

Odd, I was able to copy the stereo wave file but none of the track files.

Do you have version 1.03?

No, but I never had any problems till now.

I guess I might as well go ahead and upgrade. I was just reading about it here.

Seems like all i have to do is unzip the file, pop it on root of cf card, power up holding stop.

Well, here's on old thread. Somone was asking about the mic sim buttons, look in here.

also added another sample track, not that it shows off the unit or anything, it's basic - Every Day posted on the mp3 mixing thread.

mr8

Ok MR-8 users, where's your tunes? ;) [/B][/QUOTE]

Hey man
ive done a few tunes by now,,but i have them saved to mini disc but ihave nio idea how to get them from the md to the pc!
Ive tried just using a stereo mini jack thing into the line in on the pc,,usinag Music Match Jukebox. all i get is either white noise,,or the song at VERY low volume but TOTALLY distorted!
Any ideas?

Minidisk? I guess you mixed down to the md from the MR8 from the analog or digital out. So you now only have audio?

mr8

aye,,i did indeed mate. and im very happy with the way it sounds.
i will try to get my head around the whole
"uploading to the pc "thing soon though,
cos i know im missing out on stuff that way.
all i want to do is get the bloody md to pc transfer done,
so i can at least burn my songs to cd if i want to.
but can i do that?
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,can i fcuck!

Well, I'd say one option is to record from MD to MR8 then move the stereo tracks to #'s 7/8 and convert it to a wave file in the MR8 then hook it up to PC w/ the USB and convert it to mp3.

Or figure a way to do it with the sound card. I'm sure plenty of people somewhere around here could get you going pretty quickly with that. I never had much luck with that tho. I hate those cheap connectors on sound cards, they break all the time.

I am curious what kind of preamp you guys use in conjunction with the Mr. 8, and if this entails any equalizing?

Maybe I'll start cutting low-mids on my pre to compensate for my shitty sounding room....?

That's exactly what I've been doing. I was playing my acoustic way too hard, and it was too loud and was ringing the note my flimsy wall room is tuned at. So I was getting that boomyness and it was driving me nuts.

Right now I'm going to 1. play lighter on it, 2. use the over shoulder mic placement and 3. boost signal with the preamp with the eq setting on the one that's not warm.

I'm powering down the pc and I'll next work on a vocal track and repost my original Every Day over there at nwr, search junplugged if you want to hear it, this next version, no drums.

I have the Art V3, good thing too , b/c the MR8 has no eq and I'm not using a mixer.

Fix for a wave file missing FMT chunk

Lately I've been getting wave files that have the error on playback on PC with Winamp, "has not FMT chunk." I found that a later version of Winamp will fix this by outputting it to a wave file by going to preferences and ouput. It re-creates the FMT chunk on the .wav. these files have been maxed out 60 min. exteneded mode.
