using the Mr 8 and a shure sm57 could i get close to studio quality ... and could i get better then recording threw the sound card ? im only going to be using the mr 8 for vocals because im going to rap on it so should i buy it and will it make the qaulty sound good
if i use the sm 57 witch is dynamic mic ... remember im only recording vocals and im woundering if i can get studio qaultiy with it

quality

studio quality, your asking alot from a 300 machine. The time you put ino recording, and the YEARS it will take you to get good at it with any recorder, can produce great results, especially if used in conjunction witha pc. But one mic and an mr 8 does not make a recording studio.....

Yea, what he said. Even Beck will tell you "it takes two turntables and a microphone".

So is that all you will be recording with it is just raps? No background music/samples/whatever?

yea all i will be recording is raps but im saying i still cant get my vocals to sound good?

Your recorded vocals will sound as good as your vocalist and the mics you use.

One big factor in recording vocals is not the equipment, but the room. The MR8 and a good mic will record whatever it hears, including cars driving by if that sound makes it into the mic.

IMO whether recording spoken word, raps, or singing on an MR-8 you can do a whole lot better than an SM57. Check out one of the MXL mics on Musician's Friend or similar site. Of course you will need an external mixer or preamp with phantom power.

An SM57 is widely known as an instrument mic. I agree that you should be in the market for a different mic.

I agree, however the last time I checked, the SM57 is still the official pic used on the US Presidental podium.

I never been in a pro studio, I don't know what's in there. Seems like a whole lotta rack stuff. You could name 20 tech stuff in a pro studio I wouldn't know what it was. What I do on my MR-8 sounds like a live recording, identical to what it sounded like when I recorded it. But it doesn't sound like anything coming off a CD or the radio. It sure is nice and quiet and I get way, way better levels than I ever did with tape. I don't use my sm57 or 58 any more, I like the mxl v67 and a preamp.

If you used an MR-8 in a real studio, I'd wager to say that you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the MR-8 and higher priced equipment. This thread however is like looking for a designer dress for a pig.... IMVHO.

I SEE I SEE im thinking about ethier just getting a real expensive mic and then getting a good sound card and going that way

I had a Sure SM-57 and 58 for 15 years. Then for studio stuff last year I got a Berry ECM-8000 - they call it a test mic, but it is only like $40 and you will hear everthing thru it, it showed me something really important - the sound of my room.

I didn't know the differecne betweeen the sound of my room and the sound of my instruments untill I heard it thru this mic. It has so much high end that it has hiss, maybe internal noise, but it's interesting. I didn't have much EQ control, so I couln't use it well.

I then got for only $100 an MXL V67, I used the saem preamp w/ phamtom power for it and I love this mic. I was really impressed with it.

Also, I happended to get a good one out of the box. You should test them before you buy, but I couldn't I was lucky.

Find the mic faq here w/ a link to it and see what it says about mics and how they can differ from eachother even the same model, from the manufacturing line....

If you have decent EQ control, and phantom power, you may be able to make more use of the ecm8000 than I and you'd save some bucks and maybe get away with using that mic for a while...

This song may not be your style of music, but it was done entirely on the MR-8 using a soundtrack. I used a Shure Beta 58a mic for the vocals (this is before I bought a MXL V67, which I love). Keep in mind two things. It was one of my first recordings on my MR-8 and it is in MP3 format which is not CD quality.
I did all the vocals and most people that hear this on CD think I did it in a pro studio.
