My guitarist has an MR-8..the red one. And he says we can only record one song at a time and he got an upgraded memory card. Is this right to only be able to record Drums and guitars before the memory fills up. What he does is then he brings it back to his house and puts it on his comp. Then the next time we jam we record another song. Is this right or is there something Im missing and he is too?

What size memory card did he upgrade to? The original memory card (128mb) allows about 24 tracks minutes. In other words 8 tracks of a 3 minute song.
Is he using the "delete unused" function? If you do a take and mess up. Before starting over you should use this function to get your time back. Just deleting the track will not get the time back.

mr8

yes he is right, especially if he has the original card, i do the same thing, record a few tracks, move them to the computer for mixing and effects, then add more tracks as needed,

really only room for one song on the original card

he upgraded to a 256 I think and we can still only get one minute on it. But, If I mess up or he messes up we can still go over and do another take, so he must be doing something right

memory

There's a problem if you have a 256 and only getting a minute of recording time. What's your process for recording? More than 1 instrument at a time or overdubbing seperately? Is Punch in/Punchout possible instead of doing whole takes over? Delete/unused option. How long are your songs? These could all be factors in how your cf time is being used up. You roughly get 6 minutes at 8 tracks in normal mode. My two cents. Good luck Pj

Uhh..i never said we were getting one minute. I said a couple minutes and 6 sounds about right. We can get 6 minutes of recording time with him playing guitar, then me playing drums over his guitar, then finially him adding lead guitar over that.

uhh... '' he upgraded to a 256 I think and we can still only get one minute on it''. Sorry I must have misunderstood your post. Happy overdubbing! Pj

Sorry Pjh. I mistyped my post. I meant we could only get one song. Youre right! my bad.

I'm curious how many tracks you are laying downa nd how long your song is? My reason in asking is that I have a 512mb card and have about 90-95 track minutes on it. I record in stereo and this nets me 45-47 recording minutes.

Assuming that you have a 256mb card, your numbers are half of that. That would mean that you could get about 15 tracks of a 3 minute song. If you're not getting anything near that and you've tried the suggestions in this thread, then you may have a problem.

Oh, I should have mentioned that I made the preceeding calculations based on the uncompressed mode. You can double everything if you settle for a decreased resolution.

Good Luck, Steve

terminoligy

hey folks.
just some terminoligy here, but the MR-8 can actually store up to 99 songs on the CF card. What limits you is the legnth of each song.

With the 125 CF card we have 24 minutes of record time. Normally we think 8 tracks X 3 minutes = 24 minutes.

but if we used the MR-8 for a different purpose, we could re-think that. Lets say we are recording jingles for a radio ad. We record all 8 tracks for 60 seconds, = 8 minutes. Now we could add a 2nd song, the 30 second version X 8 tracks = 4 min, and now we have 12 minutes, 12 to go.

The big question would really be how you are recording the drums and guitar onto the machine. Obviuosly you are recording no more than 2 tracks at a time, so are you recording each drum to a specific track, or are you sub-mixing the drums into a stereo track and recording it? Same with the guitar...mono, or stereo?

Even using stereo for both the guitar and drum, would use 4 tracks multiplied by the time, 5 minutes, equals 20 minutes of time. not enough for even a full legnth mono track.

That is why we upgrade the card right away...doubling the time with a 256 and double that with the 512 card.

Once you learn about the time thing with the card, the MR-8 really is a wonderful little machine.

good luck using it!!

mr8 time

as mentioned in the other thread, the mr8 is really a great little machine and i love it,,,

but it really was designed with the thought in mind of using in conjunction with the computer, but not really advertised that way....

get a mixing program and start moving the tracks to your pc and mix there i love n track 45.00, the demo is free with some limitations...
even with the demo you wont beleive the difference in your recordings
