MR-8 CPU monitoring

What are some of you guys that are using the MR-8 with a computer monitoring with. I have used my PC to master some recordings before and have a good set of PC speakers, but they are not good for monitoring. The recordings sound good on the PC speakers but when I put a CD in my stereo or other devices it does not sound as good. Studio monitors must be made out of gold looking at the prices. What have some of you used for monitoring that is inexpensive. Headphones or some cheaper studio monitors?
 
I just use the harmon /kardons that came with my PC, that or I will use some AKG headphones instead they sound lame but I figure if it aounds good on lame headphones then it might sound good in my car etc.

This is a great question that rarely gets answered. I'm in the same boat and am ready to just buy those 'gold plated' near field monitors.

Someone asked this same question on the n-Track site, and the best answer was, if you have to use PC or stereo speakers, to listen to your favorite professional recordings on those speakers and really concentrate on where each instrument and voice is placed in the mix. Things like tone, panning, volume, etc., then try to duplicate that on your own recordings. The theory was that if you can get close to pro recordings on your PC speakers, they have a better chance of translating to other environments.

That being said, everyone I know who has invested in near-field monitors claims they are worth every penny.
 
I've been shopping around on ebay and musician's friend and there are some pretty good deals on some brands of monitors, but I'm wondering if it is one of those things where you get what you pay for? I wonder if there is some way to find out what you are getting for your money? I just want something to more accurately monitor in a home studio rather than pay for the best there is. I noticed also that there are some studio headphones that claim to be for accurately monitoring (flat frequency response) that are much less than monitors.
 
I think a lot of it is personal preference - and hype. Remember the Yamaha NS-10M? Those speakers came out in the 80's and I can't remember who started it, but the producer of a huge hit record mentioned them in an article and they became a world wide standard. Many people don't care for them, but because they were used on so many hits...


Anyone have any experience with the M-Audio powered monitors that Guitar Center is blowing out for 299?
