What issues does the new firmware address anyway?

Man, I'm almost scared to approach a new all-in-one...
Almost...

I don't think I really want to go with the VF160 either...
Where do users of broken MR8's go???

(it's not really broken.... yet....)

Vikings CF cards

Sorry,

I can subtract! :p The correct price after $25 rebate is 42.99.

With the new firmware the have speed up read/write subroutines allowing for slower CF cards to work properly when bouncing. The higher the CF speed (20x, 30, 60x) the better it is. This is based on 150 Kb/s transfer rate or what we call 1x. Check out the SanDisk 512MB Ultra boasting 60x speed. Prices ranges from $76 to $130.

Here's a 1GB offer, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000083DY0/102-5229120-0066567

The SanDisk 512MB (SDCFB512-A10) sell for $59.44 at Amazon.com.

wow, nice prices, too late for me tho.

I would wonder about a 2 gig card. I don't know if the machine's been tested with one. I'd like to see the results of that first, before taking a chance on it. Remember the bios on PC's need to be able to 'see' past a certain partition size. Maybe the memory storage on this unit is different than that. So the question is, "Has anyone tried a 1 or 2 GB CF?

I would be very hesitant to put out the cash for a 1-2 gig.

For once in my life, I'll continue to be patient and wait for the prices to come down, and wait for Fostex to confirm the operation of 1-2 gig cards....

But that's just me, and remember... I am cheap... ;)

Prices are starting to fall on these CFs. As always, the longer you wait the cheaper you might get them but then time wasted waiting vs using it...how low before you go? :o There will be always a higher, faster, cheaper coming just around the corner. :D Should I wait or buy? Never ending cycle!

Has anyone used no-working card with the new firmware? I'm curious to find out.

Kingston Cards

Can anyone tell what the difference between these two Kingston 512 Flash cards are, other than the price?

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10311745&loc=101&hdwt=30421&sp=1

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10370495&loc=101&hdwt=30421&sp=1

The latter one they call a "digital card" but it's still a flashcard. Mostly I want to know which one is the on the approved list from Fostex (http://www.fostex.co.jp/int/hdlist/mr8cflist.html).

I saw some expired Buy.com rebates for the Kingston 1GB card that seems to be same one Fostex appoved. Might have to wait to see if another rebate is offered soon. So, I take it no one here has tried the 1GB cards yet?

Thanks,
Erik

Compact Flash vs Digital Secure

The First one is a Compact Flash that can be used with the MR-8. The other one is a Secure Digital format which can not be used with the MR-8. There a many storage format available. You have to make sure you get a Compact Flash (CF) if you want to used it with the Fostex machine.

Do we know that the San Disk 1gig CF card works on all functions?

Thanks, Steve

1/2 gig is enough for me. I haven't run out of room yet with it. And if I fill it up, it still fits on a cd to back up/archive the whole contents.

But if the price comes waaay down, I guess it would be cool to have more than one project still sitting in the machine, easier to go back to w/ out having to upload usb.

Which 512 did you end up with? I'm really tired of the 256. It's always a compromise of which track from which song I REALLY need to keep...

If this helps, I have the SimpleTech 512Mb. It has a yellow, red and black label. The othe numbers seem to be control numbers and not model numbers. I don't do track bouncing but it records very well.

I wish I could tell ya which one it is. There's no specs at all on it! But I got it from memorysuppliers and I posted a pic of the package on this thread post #205, I think.

It's the SanDisk. I wish I had more info.

Oh yea, and then there's the Fostex site that was selling a 512, but I think someone said that they were out of them? I'd look there too.

Don't they summarily dismiss sandisc as incompatible?

Could have sworn that they did...

I don't think that's the Kingston approved by Fostex.

The Kingston approved by Fostex is actually manufactured by Toshiba it appears, go figure...

Geesh, I'm tired of this crap, searching for CF cards that MIGHT work...

How can you tell who manufactured the card? I just ordered a Kingston 512 card based on the fact that it was on the approved list.
Thanks,
Erik
