so I was listening to minor threat in the car this morning and you all are right. everything sounds really dry and up front. they do have some vocal efx going on. their snare drum and vocals are fantastic. the guitars go without saying....

what o/h and vocal mics would you all use to emulate that sound?

on that recording I used an Oktava MK319 for vocals and an EV RE-15 on the live song. for overheads I used EV 635a omnis and shure unidyne IIIs on the live song. I think the RE-15 gets me closer to that vocal sound. although I am now thinking I will need condensers on the O/Hs.

thoughts?

Folks like Oktava MK012 and MXL603s around here for budget OH condensers. They might do well for acoustic as well. Gobos will help contain your drum sound.

Exactly!
Try either of these mics (in pairs) for drum OH, and experiment with placement, and I think you should be well pleased. At least for the time being.

well like I said "the time being" is soon running out.

I am now starting to understand that there are not 2 but 3 or classes of gear (really its all shades of grey). but theres the stuff that costs about 300 bucks or less (all of my gear), the stuff that costs about a grand or two, and then there is the stuff that costs as much as a car. I think I am ready to take the leap into class 2. Unfortunately everybody says that you have to audition gear "by ear" but how is this even accomplished?? At this point I am not going to be recording clients, just my own band so that I have something to put in the stores. So I really would like to buy once, and buy right. If I am able to do this I should end up with what I have been after all of these years. I will continue to collect pieces, but right now I am looking to make the plunge into a serious upgrade.

So now my question is directed at the pros here who do record clients and use a variety of high end gear. If my band came into your studio, what would you put on us??

Thanks for the tip on the josephsons. those are cool. they are the same price as the sm81s though. debating between either of those and some 414s.
