MP3 Feedback (with a Poll)

I know this has been discussed before but it might be time for a reminder

There are three main types of users that participate in the MP3 forum:

1) Drop in with a song ask for feedback - never give feedback to others (or rarely).
2) Drop in with a song ask for feedback and post feedback on others while they are there.
3) Drop in and post feedback on others' tunes even when they have nothing up for review.

I think there could be more posts from those in category #1 who never give feedback. You don't need to be an expert, just willing to listen to a few tracks and write a comment.

Those in category #2 and #3 are cool in my book. I know everyone appreciates your comments.

There's no way to force people to leave feedback, but I'm just saying.....

I'm with you 100%. I tend to be more of a #2. When I have a song up, I'm around more so I'm listening and commenting on others.

There are a lot of #1's. Too many people that never listen or comment on anyone's tunes, but drop in and grace us with their presence whenver they have something new. To each their own, but I don't give them the time of day in here.

I'm somewhere between 3 and 4. I do post more when I have a song up, but I also try to regularly listen and comment when I don't have anything up. My main thing is that I'm not always in front of my monitors when I'm online. I often listen on headphones or whatever, but don't give feedback because I'm not in a good listening environment. Then I'll get home and forget to listen again.

I enjoy listening to other peoples music! I dont usually comment on music that i dont like, and i am new to recording, so i cant really give much technical advice; only on music or what i am hearing.

I'm usually only on during the night when it's too late to listen on speakers or at good volumes. But I give feedback when I can. A lot of the music in here isn't really my cup of tea but sometimes I'll still try and leave a comment. I don't post my own material that much but when I do I try to leave at least a few reviews on other people's songs. So I guess I'm a #2 or #3.

I dont expect that to happen, it's not in those people's nature. I sometimes use a "priority" system of whose stuff I will listen to i.e. the ones who are active members of this forum. I will listen to the newbies stuff once for encouragement, if they dont participate then it's usually only once.

I do the same. There's a pretty large sample of people here that I'll listen to out of respect for their knowledge or ability. I'll see a thread with their name in the title and head straight for it.

I would like to comment more, but I feel I have to stick on just commenting on wether I like the song or not. I am very new to recording and don't want to give advice on something I barley know anything about yet.

I don't want to tell people I don't like their songs either so.....

I seldom post tunes, and sometimes spend alot of time listening and trying to comment...sometimes, I don't say much, but oh well....

david's policy seems a goodun. Encourage, support, assist but only so long those receiving become participants.
I try to follow something similar though I hadn't thought about it as a personal poplicy until Ido put the poll up. It was then that I had to reflect on what I've done/do.
There are some posters I chose to ignore based on their lack of participation or negativity.
There are others wI will prioritise because of their sense of community or because I enjoy the music - I'm constantly astounded, though shouldn't be, by the number of posters whose music I would buy & for those outside my skewed tastes who impress me with how well they do what they do.

I've developed a bad habit of posting occasionally but rarely giving feedback. This isn't me being selfish - well not intentionally - it's just that I know very little about mixing

There are certain occasions when I will pitch in, and that's if it's a cover song that I know they original version of or if it's a regular poster who's style I've gotten to know; I never miss a Greg_L tune!

Oh my...introspection time.

I noticed (not surprisingly) that no one was owning up to belonging in the first two categories.. In the interest of full disclosure, I marked 1 & 2 from Ido's list on the survey.

I hardly leave any feedback (90 posts in close to 2 years) and I do post songs of my own. But, I do occasionally post even when I have nothing of my own to submit. I am on here reading and listening practically every day and listen to most of the songs posted here, but rarely feel that I have anything worthwhile to add.

Some of the feedback is pretty intimidating (as soon as anyone mentions filters or different types of compression or plug-ins I get lost) in its detail and depth of knowlege. I try to listen to the source material and read others' feedback and relate the two, but often I can't.

I came to this site naively thinking it would be a bunch of amatuer hacks like myself and was amazed at how widespread and advanced "home"recording is. I have learned so much since then from what I have heard and read here.

I guess I tend to only write about a) songs that really grab my attention, or b) songs by people (usually new) who don't seem to be getting any responses.

Well...there's my confession...hmmm that wasn't nearly as cathartic as I'd hoped.

And then there are those who bump their own threads 3 or 4 times in a row, as well as not commenting on others' tunes. Well, actually there's only one person that comes to mind that does that.

I listen to a lot of stuff in here, I don't post a lot mostly because I don't really care for a genre or I don't get the tune at all......no sense in critiquing if ya don't get it or like it.

I am never so rude as to post a tune without first offering some constructive feedback on several other songs first. How do you expect anyone to listen to you if you don't listen to others? As to posting feedback when I don't have a tune in play, I do, but not as much as I'd like; it's really dependent on how much energy I have at the time. There's a lot of times where I go "Oh, Christ, there's 4 tunes I want to hear, but I'm so fried I know I can't be a good listener right now.." so I don't. I'd rather give quality feedback than a perfunctory "good stuff, man..." If my ears and my brain are not sharp, it's no fun to listen. But sometimes, I'll come bouncing in and do half a dozen just for kicks... I really really do wish I had the time and energy to do more; there's so much talent here. SO many helped me get better, and I think I've been helpful in return a few times, and got a few good collabs out of it... I hate it when people miss that I've posted something in their threads... (AHEM, Greg-L! )

Heat, I understand your position; but don't sell yourself short. You don't have to have a lot of technical knowledge or be jargon-fluent in order to have something valuable to say. Just telling someone that their song touched you in one way or another sometimes goes a lot farther than "whipping your dick out" to show them how much you know about compressors.

Even if your feedback is negative in some way; if it's constructively phrased, and some sort of solution is suggested (even if it's just "turn down the bass a little") most folks will take it to heart appreciatively.

I try and listen and offer constructive criticism whenever I can. Sometimes I will listen in or on less than ideal speaker/systems/environments etc so it is hard to be accurate in making comments which in that case I will just listen!

I listen and comment sporadically...whether there is a song, with some of me in it or not. I love to listen whenever I can...but for me, to listen well, means giving it my full attention and listening a lot and sometimes, I am not able to do that. Maybe I have to listen many times, because my ears are not trained as well as they should be....I dunno, but I always hear new things with each listen. I like to intentionally listen to the snare, bass, crash, lead, voice....whatever, but find my listening wandering into other areas...so I have to go back several times....lol

I think one of the best things about listening to others mixes for me, is that it helps to improve listening skills. Being a judge on a mixing contest is something I would recommend for anyone wanting to hone their skills...tedious and ear burning as it may be, it is well worth the time invested.

When I take the time to listen to a song dissected by my "select" hearing, it takes on a whole different feel. Amazing what I can hear, when I get in close to each voicing whether it be human on included....rather than take in the "whole" feel of the song...as long as I can stay focused...

I've also gotten some really kick butt songs out of this place for listening to at home or in my vehicle. There is some awesome talent around this place.

Thanks to all of you guys who have given us some great music and for your mixing advice as well.

its not that I don't want to give feedback....a lot of it that I don't know what its supposed to sound like to begin with(personally....I don't get the screamo stuff at all) hard to critique if you don't have a clue
