Moving Blankets as temporary bass traps

Apologize for bumping the thread. What a classic case of "no matter how bad you think you are, there is always someone badder" Great thread.

hehe thanks guys -

super chunks might be a little too pricy for me (I'm no good with math, don't even remember how to find the area of a triangle) but it seems like it would take a lot of that fiber glass stuff for even 2 corners.

This is the stuff I used.

One box does an 8 ft tall super chunk.

(from another post around here...) ;)

"About the triangles.....
I took a 2X4 sheet, cut it in half so ya have two 2X2 pieces...
Cut from corner to corner on each of those. Total of 8 per sheet.

This gives you 17 inches down each wall side and 24 inches across the front face.

So total, you'll get 8 triangles from each 2X4 sheet.
One box of 6 sheets gets you 48 triangles.
48 triangles at 2 inches thick gives you 96 inches in height."

So it comes out to about $50 per chunk.

Dat help?

oh....and ...

"Location: Upper Baboons Asshole"

:laughings:

I'd assume that's less smelly than the Lower Baboons Asshole...?

Man, I don't know. I'd guess the lower part, but I only took one semester of physiology in college so what do I know?

sorry to revive this thread - but can anyone vouch for recordmans DIY 7$ bass trap treatment?

I'm always looking to save money - but I don't want to go cheap on it (which for 7 dollars, I have to say that is really cheap)

You would obtain better absorption figures with packaged attic blanket or rolls of R-19. The cellulose fiber blocks are a bit too dense. For deep trapping (like this) lighter, to put it simply, is more effective.

Oh, and another +1 for Frank. The GIK team is the best.

Cheers,
John

Wouldn't work as a bass trap, but these oversized moving blankets have definitely helped the sound in my studio. They're way heavier than standard moving blankets. Rockin' DIY

"Producers Choice" - "NRC of 0.8 means 80% noise reduction"?? that doesn't even mean anything. More snake oil.
Quilting cannot help sound aborption, its just a way to keep the layers from shifting, and actually compresses the material where it is quilted.
yes, these blankets can help with flutter echo. No, they do not do broadband absorption.

I'd not heard of the 'Producer's Choice blankets. Ok, they make some points re thicker', less reflective.
Comparison of Moving Blankets to Producer's Choice Sound Blankets
What I don't see is the numbers. Come on. At least?
I gave up trying to find a chart with 'moving blankets' on it but you can get a feel for the range of these kinds of things.. Maybe 'drapes flat againts the wall vs 'quilted hung (I.e. basically adding a bit thickness, and/or angles' for reflection reduction, and/or space off the wall- all add up to little bumps' in the high freq reductions, and move their 'working' freq's down a tad.
